This traditional lager is medium in body with a deep roasted character. Its dark color and rich malty flavor come from specially roasted caramel and chocolate malts. This brew is lightly hopped with Noble Bavarian hops for a soft spiciness and a smooth clean finish. Cheers!

355ml bottle picked up at Systembolaget Kiruna in Swedish Lapland. Attractive body with its deep mahogany glow. Slowly declining off-white head leaving spotty lacing on the glass. Slightly peaty malts to the nose including dark spices. Roasted dark chocolate malts in flavour countered by spiced fruits. Ends with a bitter touch. Rather foamy in the mouth (Tromsø, Whitsunday 23.05.2010).

Bottle. Beautiful very dark red with big beige head. Pleasant fresh aroma. Lovely soft palate - modest carbonation, medium body. The flavour is a nice and unusual balance of tangy freshness and chocolate / coffee / toffee dark malt. Slight bitterness to finish. Overall a pleasant and unusual beer that to my mind does not fit any style I am familiar with, but it works well.

Nice dark pour. Lagerish taste, but strong caramel breads in the finish. Tasty and light. Rated 4/5/10

Bottle. Nice, lightish stuff, very similar to Ebisu Black, my usual Black. Pitch black, but not as thick as a stout. A much lighter body as well. Malt aroma, with a good bit of malt taste, decent hops, with a decent bitterness at the finish. A little bit of sweetness, but not overboard. Very good stuff. Full of taste, though light and refreshing.

Bottle. Dark brown with a medium head that left nice lacings. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel and fruits. Quite sweet taste with roasted malt, some coffee and caramel. Descent but a little on the thin side.

12 oz bottle. Pours deep brown with an off-white head. Aroma is strong in molasses and dark fruit. Flavor is light to medium bodied with molasses, some roast coffee and chocolate, and a touch of bitterness at the end. A very nice and clean black lager.

Refrigerated bottle poured into a glass. Pours a black with dark brown highlights. Palate is a little lacking and not much lacing. The taste is light chocolate, roasted coffee, and finishes with a light hop bitterness. Pretty good beer, closer to a porter than some other schwarzbiers.

12 oz bottle. Sometimes Sam Adams lets me down (see Sam Adams Light, Boston Lager, Pale Ale, Winter Lager, Hefeweizen, etc.), other times they just blow me away. This is one of those instances. For a brewery this huge, I think it’s admirable they’re able to crank out quality like this. If this didn’t say lager on the bottle, I would totally say it’s a stout. It’s very reminiscent of English porters and stouts, like that which Samuel Smiths brews. I’ve had this beer many times before, but I guess I’d forgotten how good it actually is. Pours opaque black, revealing a reddish hue only when held close to a light source. Taste is of sweet (at first) maltiness, leading to a slight bitter aftertaste. Nice and creamy. Delicious.
