Herber, modrig getreidiger Beginn. Dazu gesellt sich eine fehlerhaft erscheinende Bitterkeit, die bis zum Ende stark vertreten bleibt. Muffig, unausgewogen, zu bitter – ein merkwürdiges Bier. 7/4/5/5/8/4

Bottle (purchased at the brewery): Chestnut-amber coloured, small foamy head; sweetish, malty, a bit toasted nose with a faint illusion of bitterness; delicate sweet-bitter flavour, low carbonation, medium bodied; nutty, caramelly finish with a late, but distinctive bitterness and a touch of alcohol. Not really great, not so well rounded...................

(bottle, from the brewery) Clear, dark amber colour with a very small creamy, slightly off-white layer. Quite shy, sweet malty nose, toasty and bready. Sweet flavour, medium body, soft carbonation. Rich dark and toasty malt-accented taste with notes of caramel; slightly sweet, light-bitter malty finish with a touch of bittering hops.

Bottled, alc. 5.6% (BB 11/2005)
Copper brown, small brownish head. Butterscotch, diacetylic nose, slightly malty. Light palate, a bit harsh, untypical (for German) grassy hoppy flavor (Polish hops?). Hoppy aftertaste. Strange märzen.

Draught Clear amber; good yellowish head, fed by fine carbonation. Malty nose, some traces of rincing solution; sweet worts. Sweet, but nice cake-taste, ends off in a more hoppy style. Well-bodied, not heavy, long hoppy aftertaste. Good Fest beer, malty version.

Sampled draught at Brauerei-Gaststätte Hummel, Merkendorf.
Orange-amber, firm head. Dry and malty, rounded and soft with chewy mouthfeel. Long salty bitterish finish. There might be more charming beer gardens, and even better beers in Franconia, but I can easily picture myself living in Merkendorf...
