The Meerts Tilquin series was made by fermenting fruit that had already been used once. Airelles sauvages (wild lingonberries) were fermented for a period of 4 months in a blend of 80% 1 year old Meerts and 20% of a blend of different 2 year old lambics. Meerts (or March Beer) is a low strength lambic, which was originally produced with the weaker wort obtained from the rinsing of the grains. Unfiltered and unpasteurized, they are refermented in the bottle.

Bottle. Almost clear orange golden to dull pink. Looks nice. Fresh funky notes, typical meerts notes like the other versions but also some more oak and deeper funk from the lambic. Fruit here is a bit more present than in other versions, aromatic berries, roses, bubblegum, vanilla, strawberries. Medium sour and less sweet. Medium bodied, very sparkly and slight dry. Lovely, one of the better Tilquin meerts for me.

Another new one in the second 'Meerts' series by Tilquin, based on second running lambic and second running fruit, so to speak, this time the 'derivative' of Oude Airelle Sauvage à l'Ancienne, a rather unusual fruit lambic with (indigenous) lingonberries. Thick, frothy, audibly crackling, egg-white, thickly plaster-like lacing, stable head, misty deep warm orange-glowing peach blonde robe with somewhat rosy tinge and busy strings of visible sparkling. Aroma of sour wild berries as expected with even a faint sweet raspberry-like touch to it, but integrated in lots of 'rural' lambic elements, green plum, dust, old wood, wet leather, 'horseblanket', cranesbill leaves, oxidized Granny Smith apple, old dusty strawbales, unripe orange, barnyard. Crisp onset, very fruity with a tangy red berry astringency to it but also quite some juiciness (even a very vague hint at sweetness somewhere) so apparently the lingonberries have kept their powers very well, surrounding impressions of grape skin, unripe nectarine and green apple, fizzily carbonated with tingling minerally effects; supple bready core, pronounced lactic acid but in a fruity, lively way, blending seamlessly with the sharper acids from the fruit. Remains juicy and fruity till the end but draped over a dry finish with lots of berry skin and wood tannins, a 'dusty' kind of funkiness (straw - and even Michael Jackson's proverbial horseblanket) and retronasal ripe lingonberry aromas. It is quite marvellous how well these berries, or what was left of them before they went in here, have kept their flavours, not just the astringency and sourness, but also the sweet side and even juiciness; embedded in a funky, rural, farmland-evoking lambic, the overall result is more than pleasing. Very elegant berry lambic - one of the better variants in this second Meerts series for me.
