An exciting combination of a Canadian staple and the North East’s most beloved beer style. This modern take on a North Eastern classic has deep malty flavours of biscuit, nuts, caramel, hints of chocolate and fermented maple syrup which creates a woodland aroma.

19/7/2024. Cask at the 2024 Chelmsford Summer Beer & Cider Festival. Pours dark amber brown with a small frothy off-white head. Odd aroma of curry powder more than the expected maple. There was no food contamination involved. Others in the group got it too, not just me. Tasted okay but the nose wasn’t good.

Cask (gravity) at Smithfield, Derby. Pours “bitter brown” with no head whatsoever. The areoma is basically maple syrup. In the mouth this is sweet and syrupy with malts and some underlying caramel. After a while there are some hints of ginger and other spices and, later still, a smattering of treacle. Slight bitterness in the finish. This is decent, but I’m not sure it’s really a Brown Ale.

440ml can from Thirsty Moose. Amber golden brown colour, bubbly white foam head and aroma of malt, maple syrup, chocolate hint. Taste is sweet, malty, biscuit, toffee, fried fruits, caramel, maple syrup note, alittle chocolate and nutty bitterness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, malty nutty bitter finish. Quite drinkable.
