Draught at the brewpub. Weak smoky aroma. Clear dark copper colour. Small off-white head. The flavour is quite smoky as well, also malty and slightly sweet. I do not know if the smoke is intended, but it works well.

From tap at Zeitgeist. Pours clear and golden orange with a creamy and slight off-white head. Butterish and mild roasted malty aroma. Light caramel in the initial flavour. Vague buterish note too. Light smoke note on the back of the nose.

Draught at Bruxellensis 2008, Brussels, Belgium
Clear amber body. Off-white, creamy/rocky head. Lightly smokey roma. Moderately bitter, lightly sweet flavour with smokey ints. Nice, though not great.

On draft at Zeitgeist @ the Jolly Gardeners, Lambeth, 16/5/08. Chestnut coloured with a decent, foamy off-white head. Aroma of raisins, slightly smoky malt and a touch of caramel sweetness. Flavour was of slightly doughy malt, easy-drinking with more fruit, some earthy hops and spice and a touch of smoke in the finish. Excellent stuff.

Draft. A copper colored beer with a lazing white head. The aroma is sweet malty combined with a light note of caramel. The flavor is sweet malty with quite strong notes of caramel. The alcohol is just barely felt on the tongue - and then a flowery hoppy note sets in and leads to a good bitter finish. Very fresh.

(draught at the brewery) Slightly hazy, amber colour with a big foamy, slightly off-white head. Moderately sweet and toasted malty, slightly bready nose with a touch of smoke and citrousy fruity notes. Light bitter flavour with an even lighter sweetish edge, almost medium bodied with a moderate, well-carbonated and smooth mouthfeel. Slightly toasted, malt-accented taste with smoked malt (or is it the “offene Befeuerung” that evokes the impression?), leaving room for a subtle fruitiness; moderately dry, slightly bitter and smokey finish. Not only a well-quaffable but superb and even complex brew. Highly recommended.

On tap at the brewpub: Amber coloured, quite firm off-white head; distinctive sweet-dark-malty nose with a touch of roasted malt; robust sweet-bitter flavour, medium-bodied, soft MF; slightly lingering sweet-malty finish with a distinctive touch of smoked malt in the aftertaste. Good and moreish..........

(On tap) Clear, amber golden with a creamy, off-white head leaving some lacework. Lightly caramelish aroma. Medium body with a good malty feel and a hoppy - distinctly hoppy - finish where also some alcohol shows. 101106

Lighter chestnut, very clear; cream-coloured, dense & big head. Rich bread nose, some Kümmel included. Lots of caramel too, maybe even some Maillard. And, incongruously, Chinese shrimps in batter (sorry). Eeeeh! - that's a nice bitterness for a German brew. Good malty (sweet and roasted) underbuild, but the noble German-type hops reign. I still suspect Maillard. Titillating mouthfeel & carbonation as from mineral water. Medium to full-bodied. Rather long bitterish aftertaste, with malt-syrup. As John & Edo said, this beer is far above the general Franconian level. Very good - thanks to L. Meulders who has a good nose for a good pint. --- Beer aliased from original tick of Dunkel Rauchbier on 15 Aug 2009 at 02:32 - Score: Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 9 | Flavor - 7 | Texture - 10 | Overall - 8. Original review text: Draught Copper-foxy beer, amberish tinted head. Good, if restrained smoked hamaroma, smoked beechwood. NICE! Fresh, smoked malt/ham flavours, with a sweet finish. Much more refreshing than the "usual" Rauchbiere; medium bodied, sticky as a Rauchbier ought to be. Nice one. A good one to compare to the Rauchzart from Barnikel, Herrnsdorf.
