Brewed to Henry Harvey’s Porter recipe of 1859. Pale, crystal and black malts combine with a generous hop grist of Fuggles and Goldings. Full and rounded with roasted malts to the fore. It is conditioned in cask for four weeks before being released from the brewery cellars.
Harvey’s Porter was first in its class and overall runner-up at the 1995 GBBF at Olympia. In 1999 it was chosen as the ‘Ultimate Pizza Beer’ in the Beauty of Hops awards

Bottle courtesy of Jerc: Poured a deep black color porter with a small foamy head with limited retention and no lacing. Aroma of roasted bitter malt with some light dry coffee notes. Taste is also dominated by some roasted coffee notes with some light sweet notes. Body is very average with some medium to low carbonation. No a lot of complexity in this beer but very enjoyable nonetheless.

Deep dark brown (almost black) coloured, medium sized brown head, chocolate licorice nose. Roasted malt, coffee and bitter chocolate with notes of dried fruits and cocoa. Notes of hops and salt in the finish. Very good porter.

This porter poured the usual black colour with a rocky tan head. To the nose you could get scents of molasass, corn syrup and dark sweet malt. First taste was sweet and thick tasting with an almost oily mouthfeel. Tastes include big time molasass, smoke and a slight bitter hop flavour. The finish is slightly smokey and burnt tasting. The palate has a lasting bitter flavour on the back of the tongue with that molasass flavour shining through. Not bad but lacking in flavour. Over all is like taking a sip of old books.

275ml bottle from brewery shop. Black with faint ruby edges, thick tan head. Excellent almost peaty malt aroma. This is thick and unctious. Thick heavy tarry roasted malt aromas. Seriously this beats a lot of porters/stouts and impy stouts with bigger reputations. All the intense flavours, but no ridiculous massive hops on finish. This is awesome. Menthol, eucalyptus. Drank at room temperature on Lewes to Ashford train with the Inspiral Carpets.

Sample at AleFest Dayton (As Tom Paine Porter): This beer is a very dark brown color with a thin beige head and spotty lacing. The aroma is chocolatey cocoa and burnt malt. Medium-bodied and dry with roasted malt and chocolate flavors. The finish is sweet molasses and chocolate. Better than expected overall.

Bottled. Dark brown, almost black, with a very small, beige head. Lots of coffee and mocca in the aroma, as well as dark chocolate and a vague fruity note. Balanced flavor with roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and dried fruits. A bit thin body and a coffee-ish, roasted, dry, bitter finish. A light, quaffable porter. (060626)

I found a lone, dust covered bottle of this at a local store, with a torn label, and what appeared to be a pidgeon feather stuck to the price tag - pour is very opaque, with a somewhat frothy lacing - highly complex aroma of brown sugar, prunes, dates, licorice - nearly zero carbonation, medium bodied - slight bitterness cuts the sweet flavors of dates, chocolate chip cookie dough, sweetened coffee, licorice - bready finish - a unique and tasty porter.

This is very complex - treacly, with port-like flavours and aromas, a rich dark fruit character, an oily body, and a touch of dark chocolate as well. A top five porter.
