19/VII/16 - 33cl bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent) @ home - BB: 8/III/17 (2016-767)

Clear pale blond to yellow beer, big creamy white head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: malty, grains, hay, cow fodder. MF: ok carbon, light body. Taste: very malty, little sweet, bit metallic, soft bitterness. Aftertaste: watery, some grains, grassy touch, hoppy, bit metallic.

Old-fashioned 33 cl version of this brewery’s standard lager, and as older Belgian beer drinkers know, standard lager on 33 cl is called ’export’ in Flanders (and has nothing to do with the German Dortmunder Export style). It can be the same beer in larger bottles, but it can be a somewhat different recipe too, and that is exactly the case here: a bit less alcohol than Romy Pils, a little less hops. Typical golden blonde colour under a cream white head and pure but simple malt sweet profile with, indeed, very low, but still noticeable hop bitterness in the finish. Correct for its style but in all still a bland standard lager.

33cl bottle @ home. Clear golden color, medium sized white head that diminishes fairly quickly. Smell and taste malts, hay, lightly bitter. Quite clean and crisp. Average body, mdeium carbonation. Nice and easy drinkable beer.

(Bottle 33 cl) Pours a pale pilsener golden with a neat, white head. Rather clean, malty base with a very soft mouthfeel. Perfectly balanced with a medium bitterness that fits the malt base. Very well made. 130598

Pretty old bottle Gold, with a slight coppery shine; good dense white head, remarkably stable. Cake, oxydized, ambrée malts, sweet, and very slightly caramelized nose. Soft-sweet, again very cake-y taste, bit leafy or old greenery. In the finish there’s a reminiscence of bitterness. Light, but with a slickness as from an artificial sweetening. Held up amazingly good for this kind of beer.
