Caramel, coffee and yoghurt aroma and flavor. Lots of banana. Some yeasty bitterness. Rather thin with a bit of sourness.

0,5 l bottle from my local Hol´Ab! market. Unclear dark brown in the glass, small one finger pale beige head. Yeast, wheat and fruity elements on the nose. Sweet berryfruity and caramell taste at the start. Later some wheat and yeast, low banana and sulfur. Getting a little bit dry in the second part. More on the thin side and can not fullfill all expectations.

(Bottle, Aufsturz, Berlin, 24 Aug 2016) Hazy brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with dark bread, prunes, raisins, chocolate and banana. Malty, slightly roasted taste with notes of dark bread, chocolate, ripe banana and dried fruit. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Tasty and well made dunkelweizen. Quite nice.

Cloudy orangey brown colour. Aroma has some biscuity malt and banana. Flavour has banana sweetness and a mild, yeasty aftertaste.

Bottled. Brownish amber colour with a small beigeish brown head. Aroma is chocolate, wheat, toasted malts, soem toffee and yeast. Flavour is caramel, some toffee, yeast, mild bananas as well as some mild toasted notes.

Dunkelweizen from Baden-Württemberg, from a stubby 50 cl bottle with screw cap, perhaps inspired by similar experiments in the wine world. I pour this in a Maisel’s Hefeweizen ’vase’, in which it looks already majestic... Thick and dense, egg-white, frothy head as usual in this style, colour mahogany (orangey brownish) with yellowish edges, fully cloudy with a great deal of sparkling, almost like a sparkling wine. Aroma of red apple, banana, cookies, brown bread, cloves, ’speculoos’, cinnamon, gingerbread, chestnuts, sourish wheat coming through nicely. Fruity taste, restrainedly sweet, some banana, peach and passion fruit hints, wheaty sourness piercing through with very refreshing effect; soft and smooth mouthfeel, a bit powdery and fluffy as usual in this style, caramelly and somewhat nutty malt sweetishness in the middle, retronasal spiciness from the yeast (cloves) and finishing in a play of sweet, sour and bitter, all in a subtle way and working well together, but the sourishness lasts the longest; texture-wise, one could argue the finish is perhaps a bit thin and on the watery side. Though not Bavarian and not the most tasty Dunkelweizen I ever had, this is a perfectly acceptable, well-made and well-balanced example of the style (a style I prefer over the closely related Belgian witbiers), highly drinkable and very quenching. As a consequence, I don’t quite understand the averagely low ratings here...

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein trübes braunes Bier mit schöner Schaumkrone. Geruch hefig, röstmalzig, leicht fruchtig würzig. Geschmack hefig, leicht würzig, leicht fruchtig.
