Malted barley is a vital part of the Scottish brewing tradition. We use three different varieties to create the deep colour and smooth nuttiness; each grain is milled right here in our brewery, giving us complete control over flavour and freshness.
Then we balance this rich brew with just the right amount of Challenger and Fugle hops.

500 ml bottle sampled in 2009. Deep golden body with a big creamy off-white head. Aroma is mainly malt and caramel with a hint of fruit. Flavor is malt, caramel and some bitterness. Medium body and aftertaste. Decent, plain and uncomplicated bitter.

500ml bottle from Beer Hawk - Red amber body. Diminishing white head. Aroma of Peaty, smoky malt. Flavour similar but with a refreshing fruity hop finish with some acidity. Not bad, had many similar in Scotland.

50cl bottle from Appellation Wines. Pours amber-red with a nice thin lacey head. The nose has cake mixture, flowers and some ripe apples. The taste has more ripe apples with a touch of malty sweetness and just enough hops to clean it with just a touch of caramel on the end too. The palate is light to medium bodied and has a thin texture with a clean finish. Overall, a solid bitter which is very drinkable even if it’s not that exciting.

Aroma - light fruity malts.....nothing else
Taste - Fruity malts...some sweetness...slight grapey...odd flavour..not much hop presence...bit of apple.....overall not good
Palate - soft carb..thin body. Finish - dull...rapid...slightly sour...bit of bitterness
Overall - A poor bitter....way below average...best aspect of this beer is its appearance

Clear amber to copper red beer, fizzy aery irregular off-white head, unstable, dissipates immediately. Aroma: sweet overripe fruits, forest fruits, come caramel, touch of banana. MF: no carbon, light to medium body. Taste: surprisingly sour start, lemony, red berries, sour raspberries. Aftertaste: more tartness, slightly bitter, sour raspberries. Probably something went wrong with either the batch or the bottle. Definitely reminds of infected beer.

Cask at Archibald Simpson’s, Aberdeen. It pours red-amber, with a decent white head. The nose is floral (particularly chamomile), sweet red fruit, touch of vinegar and rhubarb. The taste is full of red fruit: strawberry, raspberry, red grape, as well as straw, hay, chamomile, light vinegar and spice, with a fruity finish. Light to medium body, soft carbonation and well balanced. Flavoursome and very drinkable.

Bottle from Peckhams. Amber colour, foamy medium off-white head. Aroma of caramel malts, bit nutty. Flavour is soft malty, medium carbonation, caramel, some fruitiness.

Bottle from Corks, Bristol. Red amber in colour with a decent, off-white head. Sweetish, caramel aroma with a hint of chocolate drinking powder and slight hint of roastiness. Malty flavour with more caramel, some fruit, cereals and a long, bitter finish. Enjoyable.
