Malted barley is a vital part of the Scottish brewing tradition. We use three different varieties to create the deep colour and smooth nuttiness; each grain is milled right here in our brewery, giving us complete control over flavour and freshness.

Then we balance this rich brew with just the right amount of Challenger and Fugle hops.

Hops: Challenger, Fuggle, Pioneer
Malts: Pale Ale, Crystal, Roast

First rating: Big pale brown lasting head. Brown-red body with light carbonation. Fruity dusty aroma with chocolatey notes. Dry roasty fruity taste with chocolatey notes. Faint, faint vinegar-like traces, too. Light body. Faintly watery mouthfeel. Dry fruity earthy dusty aftertaste with wooden notes. Quite good, but not entirely successful. A bit hollow and vinegary, for whatever reason. (0.5l bottle, Centra, Oslo.) 6,4,6,3,12=3.1

Second rating: Big beige head. Clear deep dark red body. Dusty fruity caramelly aroma with wild berry notes. Dryish fruity red berry and caramel taste with dusty notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, mealy mouthfeel. Dryish papery fruity dusty aftertaste with wild berry notes. Nice, drinkable, not terribly complex. (0.5l bottle, from Gulating Ølutsalg, Strømmen.) 6,4,6,3,13=3.2

A clear dark amber to brown ale with a thick frothy light moka head. A nutty malt in aroma, with light fruity esters. In mouth, a light ale with nutty malts, lots of caramel, some woody notes, not a lot of hops, overall, quite simple and uninteresting. BB OCt. 2009. LCBO Roland and Russell Private import.

500 ml bottle, now available in Norway (bought at Vaaland, Bryne). ABV is 4.2%. Amber coloured beer, moderate off-white head. Aroma of malts, English malt vinegar, fruits and silage. The flavour is malty but also very fruity, hints of berries and malt vinegar, "dusty" hops in the finish. Not really brilliant.

500ml bottle picked up at Luvians bottle shop in St Andrews. Good looking in the glass with its deep mahogany body under a decent, off-white lacing head. Smell of dried fruits with a plumy touch. The taste is a blend of dark malts and dark fruits ending up with hints of bitter berries. Satisfying [08.11.2008].

bottle, thank you pivnizub! Hazy copper-brown colour, mid-sized beige head. Hoppy nose. Dry mouthfeel, slightly malty only but with lovely aromatic hops and some good but shy fruity flavours. A good one.

Hazy dark red-brown. Loose, thin head. The aroma is earthy, slightly caramelly with faint whiskeyish notes. Soft, caramelly body with more speyside whisky accents. Rounded malts and a slightly earthy hoppiness. Creamy body. Nourishing. Nicely done.
