The Chimay Blue is a dark ale with a powerful aroma. Its complex flavor improves with passing time. The 75-centiliter version (since 1982) is called ''Grande Réserve'' because of its great storage potential., It was first brewed as a Christmas beer by the monks of Scourmont Abbey in 1956. But after its great success, it was decided to offer it permanently.

Pours deep brown amber with whiteish head. Flavour is yeast and caramel. Fairly subtle, but persistent. Enjoyable, but the rating seems a bit high.

LCI. It was great to drink this not far from Chimay (which I didn't see). I'm posting a pic of Rochefort though because I did end up driving by the private monastery 😆 looked beautiful but it's no Orval.

750 ml corked & caged bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 9%. Chestnut to mahogany colour, large beige head. Aroma of malts, brown kandij sugar, caramel, dark dried fruits and spicy Belgian ale yeast. Pleasant flavour with the same elements as the aroma, moderate to modest bittering hops.

(Rerate, small bottle.) This is a great beer! Vinous must be the word here. I started drinking this near to room temperature - interesting aroma (leather, oak) but not very refreshing (even a vinous beer should be!) till I had cooled it down in the fridge for half an hour. I think +12-14 degrees C should be right for this beer. Colour is dark brown, alcohol well hidden. Fizzy carbonation that disappeared rapidly. As the beer is bottle conditioned, I suppose this will vary from one bottle to another. Flavour that calls for sipping, aftertaste lasts forever. Expensive in Norway, but worth the price.
