Pours dark clear amber with a thick head. Aroma of wood and sweet malt. Taste is malty and light, hints of oak on the back of the tongue. The palate has some caramel influences, fewer spices than is expected of the style. Sweet, aged malt dominates this beer.

This fall I have been working my way through a number of Oktoberfest beers after laying off for a few years from burnout. This one is the last of the group in the fridge, needs to be opened before it times out. I found Spaten at a local supermarket as a lonely 12 oz bottle. Opening now and pouring into a basic bar glass with a handle I detect a dark orange-amber body, a here and gone, off-white head while I do see a healthy stream of bubbles coming up from the bottom. A light candy and grain scent, nothing out of the ordinary. A drink finally, hey, pretty good. Malt, caramel, bread, less watery than most of the other Marzens. Full body relatively. Nice with a cigar I assure you.

I rated this years ago under the German version. Just now realized my mistake and transferred it over.

On tap at Oktoberfest at Daanen’s Deli Saturday. Pours a clear copper with a light-beige head with excellent retention and decent lace. Aroma is malty caramel, toasted nutty bread, grass and kind of skunky. Has a bittersweet taste with average carbonation and a medium body.

Backlog. Bottles and draft over the years. Pours a clear amber with an off-white head that lingers. Toasted malt aromas with bread and pretzel notes as it warms. Smooth and medium bodied. Well balanced with some light toasted toffee and light peppery hops.
