Mackeson's Brewery of Hythe, Kent first released the beer in 1909. Whitbread acquired the brand in 1929. By the 1950s it accounted for half of Whitbread's production and was brewed in several of their breweries. In 1993 Whitbread moved production to their Castle Eden and Samlesbury plants. From May 1999, production was contracted out to Young's Brewery of Wandsworth. In 2001 Whitbread was purchased by Interbrew (now AB InBev) and since then brand has been shunted from plant to plant and is currently brewes at their Luton plant. A few years back, the alcohol content was dropped from its original 3% to 2.8%

Can from Seoul Plaza. Very dark colour, beige head. Dry roasty simple stout, similar to continental draught Guinness. Actually quite palatable, easy drinking.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Max’s place. Thanks Tom L. Black with a tan head. Aroma of roast, stale coffee with milk, and a bit of cardboard. Sweet flavor with stale coffee with milk, and a roasty finish. Light-bodied.

330ml can into glass. Pours pitch black with large coffee coloured head. Smells like milk chocolate and coffee. Tastes like iced coffee. Mouthfeel is medium and milky. With your eyes closed this IS iced coffee. Nice but weird.

Appearance is opaque, brown tinges at the base. A one finger beige foamy head. Aroma- caramel, sweetness, milky, chocolate, cocoa. Taste- dry roast, chocolatey, milky, some sweetness with hints of caramel, but it actually becomes bitter at the end. A bit fuller in the mouth than expected, given the low abv. Perfectly drinkable and pleasant.

Can from Beers of Europe. Pours dark brown, long-lasting tan head. Aromas of light cooked cherries, dark sugar. Taste is light sweet. Decent body for the strength. Drops off at the end, but decent enough.

33cl can thanks to allmyvinyl. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely crema head. Nose - fruit cake and molasses. Some black jack sweets. Taste - dried raisins, brown sugar and coca cola. Palate - light to medium bodied but then too sweet throughout. Overall - yeah, better than I expected but the sweetness gives the impression of a sickly soft drink. Have to say it’s good for the low alcohol though.

Can. Nose is roast, slight smoke, toast. Taste is smoke, sugars slight lactose leading to coffee and a little caramel. Mouthfeel is thin. It’s a northern classic and in the dark days of beers in the 90s it was a reliable favorite, but is ultimately quite ordinary. .
