Mackeson's Brewery of Hythe, Kent first released the beer in 1909. Whitbread acquired the brand in 1929. By the 1950s it accounted for half of Whitbread's production and was brewed in several of their breweries. In 1993 Whitbread moved production to their Castle Eden and Samlesbury plants. From May 1999, production was contracted out to Young's Brewery of Wandsworth. In 2001 Whitbread was purchased by Interbrew (now AB InBev) and since then brand has been shunted from plant to plant and is currently brewes at their Luton plant. A few years back, the alcohol content was dropped from its original 3% to 2.8%

33cl can thanks to allmyvinyl. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely crema head. Nose - fruit cake and molasses. Some black jack sweets. Taste - dried raisins, brown sugar and coca cola. Palate - light to medium bodied but then too sweet throughout. Overall - yeah, better than I expected but the sweetness gives the impression of a sickly soft drink. Have to say itโs good for the low alcohol though.

Can. Nose is roast, slight smoke, toast. Taste is smoke, sugars slight lactose leading to coffee and a little caramel. Mouthfeel is thin. Itโs a northern classic and in the dark days of beers in the 90s it was a reliable favorite, but is ultimately quite ordinary. .

330ml can. Dark brown-black colour, foamy beige head which diminishes leaving some lacing and aroma of roast malt, coffee & chocolate. Taste is sweet roast malt, some fruitiness, an earthy smokey bitterness and nutty notes. Watery thin mouth feel, light to medium bodied, low carbonation, clean finish. OK.

Normal stout appearance, black with a short, creamy beige head. Aroma is almost nonexistent, but taste is normal stout bitterness. elements of coffee and chocolate, an overall decent stout.

Low alcohol stout with a nice roasted malt aroma, but not carried through too well into the taste, but it does maintain a decent texture.

0.33l can. This one pours a deep brown - near black actually, body under a big and almost creamy chocolate-head. On the nose I get tones of sweet chocolate and thin roasted malts. A hint of something burned as well, but is's all in all not a massive aroma bomb this. It's quite sweet and watery in flavor, thin roastiness with a really present burned and almost ashy finish and aftertaste. A bit minerally and dry as well in the finish. Easy drinking, but not to impressive really. 02.08.2012
