bottle - Pours brown with a very minimal light tan head. It smells of caramel malt and a hint of dark fruit. It tastes sweet with caramel, bread, and fruity flavored. Softly carbonated, flavorful, and light to medium bodied, it’s a good, very drinkable brew.

Feb 2010: Brown 500ml flip-top bottle, with two weeks of life left of its best before date. Poured into a vase shaped ’Old Speckled Hen’ badged glass. Looked impressive, a deep head of a light tan colour sat on top of a dark brown body that was clear and full of very small rising bubbles. A hint of roasted malts in the aroma, pleasant but only a faint smell really. The taste was malts all the way, smokey malts, if I didn’t know better I’d have thought this a Bamberger style rauch beer. I’ll go for mildly smoked, with a fresh hop bitterness in the aftertaste. The alcohol can be found as the mouth dries and makes the beer very drinkable indeed.

Sampled from a 16.9 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with a huge creamy beige head that lingered forever and left good lacing. The aroma was very malty with notes of toasted nuts, toffee, caramel and faint dark fruits. The flavor was bready and nutty with notes of malted milk, cream, toffee and a bitter and tart fruity undertone. The finish was long bread and malted milk. Full bodied and very creamy. Well done.

Bottle from Corks, Bristol. Medium brown in colour, with a slight haze and tight, off-white head. Sweet, caramel and red fruit aroma with a faint roastiness. Big, fruity flavour, with malty earthiness, liquorice and a touch of spice. The finish was long and bitter. An excellent beer.

500 mL swingtop from Total Wine West Richmond, VA. Pours a clear dark brown color with a medium tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of toasted malts with a bit of roast and a faint hop finish. The taste is toasted malts, cherries, raisins, a bit of roast and a mild hop finish. Medium bodied, average carbonation.
