Like a rugged off-road version of its smooth, dry Irish cousin, the Foreign Extra Stout is gnarly and coat-your-mouth chewy as opposed to clean and crisp. We’ve gone big on the roast malts here, with both roast barley and black malt in the kettle, and doubled down on the darkness with a substantial addition of molasses. The original Foreign Extra Stouts were fortified with increased hopping rates to aid preservation, and that extra bitterness balances the higher ABV as well as the treacle-sweetness.

Can at home in Hackney - sourced from cork & Cask. Pours black with a foamy, deep beige head. Lightly sweet with ashy roast, scorched earth, rubber, cocoa, leather dark fruits, a little peat. Light bodied with delicate carbonation. Bittersweet finish, rounded dark malt character, more ash, dark chocolate, smoke, earth. Could do with a bit more body but it has nice depth.

Thin light brown head left a spotty cover on a dark brown body. Malt, boozy, honey & orange aroma. Medium bodied, smooth, airy & cloying on the back. Malt, raisin, chocolate, roasted & treacle tastes with a bitter pine finish. Great brew.

Can from the interweb. Probably hop shop? It pours near black with a sturdy, lasting tan head. The aroma is bitter - sweet, dark chocolate, umami, rich roasted malt, dark fruits, some plum pudding, sachertorte, mellow smoke, liquorice, touch of rocky road and light charred peppery spice. The taste is dry, rich roasted malt, light charred vibes, bitter - sweet, dark chocolate, cacao nibs, mid palate smoothness, toothy, dark fruits, plum, prune, cherry, nip of spice, splash of Dandelion & Burdock, toasty and a touch of ash with a roasty finish. Fulsome body and fine to moderate carbonation. Rounded, robust and moreish. A satisfying beverage.

Cans from Cork & Cask and Lupe Pintos. Black body with a beige head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of roasted malt and woody ash. Flavour of blueberry, cranberry and rich dark malt. Thin to medium body with a smooth mouthfeel. Soft fizz. Rich and roasty with a nice tangy edge. The body is a bit thinner than I’d like but the aroma and flavour is on point.
