Can, at Patricks. An oily pour reveals a black body and no head. Roasted malts, soy, molasses and licorice, some dark dried fruit and a piney hint. It's full bodied and lightly warming, smooth and mostly flat on the palate. Soy, molasses, roasted malts, some burnt notes and coffee in the flavor. Some bitterness to deal with all the sweetness. Lasting finish. Well, it's nice, at least as a dessert. Not a beer I think I'll repeat. 241022

Can on the train back from Bingohame, picked up from Cotts, 09/07/23. Pitch black topped with a dirty tan head that thins to a swirl. Nose is dark chocolate shavings, dried fruit rinds, burnt toffee, mellow roast. Taste comprises toasted brown sugars, vinous, dark malts, roasted tones, molasses syrup, bitter dark fruits, chocolate. Full bodied, oily feel, semi drying close with a warming alcohol climax. Tidy enough old skool impy sipper ... not feeling the love others have adorned this with ... a touch 1D and lacking depth for me.

Keg at Casc, Aberdeen. It pours oily jet black with a very small beige cap. The aroma is rich roasted maltage, oily, unctuous, liquorice allsorts, umami, dark chocolate, cacao nibs, gateaux and some smooth roast coffee. The taste is smooth, slick, oily, bitter - sweet character, deep dark roasted malt, mouth coating oiliness, umami, liquorice, rich and toasty, nice hit of coffee, dark chocolate, gateaux, there is some dark and dried fruits in there, toasted fruit cake, nip of spice, restrained alcohol presence and warming roasty finish. Fulsome body, fine carbonation and thick, oily mouth feel. An impressive heavy-duty adjunctless malt bomb. Rich and good depth. Strikes a rather nice bitter - sweet balance (to my palate anyhow). Only thing that would elevate it is a touch more carbonation, but perhaps I would get that from a can.

Can bought at Hoplocker, South Bank. Aroma is sweet with a light bitter edge. Sweet caramel, praline and espresso. Dark and glossy. Foamy tan head fizzes away and gradually recedes almost totally. Initial sweet creamy cacao. Molasses and salted caramel. This is followed by bitter espresso and dark chocolate. Medium-heavy bodied. Oily. Average-fizzy carbonation. Long finish. Biggg ricchhh Impy Stout. Yum.
