Viven Smoked Porter is a fairly bitter porter beer, with a very smokey flavour. Accents of coffee and dark chocolate make for a powerful aroma in your glass.

Temporary rating. At some point I might re-write this. Dark blackish brown, small brown head, rather quick diss, small trace. Malty, roasted malts, cookie dough, milk chocolate, toasted cereal, sweetened coffee, hay, tiny sour, dry soil, tiny smoke, Sweet, bitter, malty, roasted malts, dark bread, banana bread, dark grapes, lemon zest, hay, dry soil, milk choc, watered down coffee, smoked ham, round, soft, tart, medium. Bitter, sour, roasted malts, dark bread, dark choc, dark grapes, moist wood, cereal, hay, lemon zest, smoked ham Not sure it’s supposed to be sour but it kinda suits the beer so all in all a solid beer.

Bottle. Sweet smoky chocolate malt and prune aroma. Black brown with a large tan head. Smoky roasty malt, sweet chocolate, a little char, and light funky yeast flavor. Medium full body, soft carbonation. Nice.

Tap at Brasserie V. Stained-glass deepest burgundy-brown-black. Massive rusty beige head, big and foamy. Big smoke in the aroma, some chocolate. Belgian Porters, the few I’ve had, have been quite nice. This is no exception. Smooth roasty chocolate body, not overcarbonated, very mellow. Sweet but balanced by the smoke and the funky yeast tones. A really enjoyable offering, a cool addition to the Belgian beer world.
