Viven Smoked Porter is a fairly bitter porter beer, with a very smokey flavour. Accents of coffee and dark chocolate make for a powerful aroma in your glass.

Bottle. It pours a dark brown body, unclear, and topped by a creamy, minimal sized light beige head. Rather smoked aroma, ham and some old bonfire. Some cocoa and forest. Creamy, soft mouthfeel and semi-dry. Some alcohol warmth too. Ham, bonfire hints and cocoa in the flavor, nice bitterness too. Lasting roasted and bitter finish. Some yeasty hints. Certainly not a beer I’d expect from Belgium, but it’s pleasant indeed. 130516

Refrigerated 75 cl brown bottle from the rare beer of the month club caged and corked and poured into a snifter. Pours opaque black with dark brown highlights, medium light brown head which dissapates fairly quickly. Light smoke aroma, medium body, good thin lacing, and medium/low carbonation. Taste is roasty, some milk chocolate, salty, and some smoke (meat). Good, but not great.

On draft at Max’s 9th Annual Belgian Fest. Pours a watery, mostly opaque deep brown with some cloudy white head. Nose is big and smokey, bacon, smoked salmon, wet wood, brown sugar. Flavor is lightly sweet, brown sugar, big smoke, smokey BBQ sauce, bacon, mushrooms, smoked salmon. Full, smokey finish. Decent. Tons of umami character

Black, big tan head dissipates to thin layer, good lacing.
Aroma of roasted malts, soft burnt toast, espresso, soft smoke.
Taste of roasted malts, espresso roast, soft mellow burnt toast, sweet dark rich malts, good mellow smoke.
Palate is medium carb, medium to full body, creamy rich malts, sweet dark malts counterbalance the burnt toast and smoke, very smooth texture. Finish as main flavour, good linger of mouthcoating rich dark malts with some soft burnt roast and chocolate
Overall - Very good porter, the burnt roast isn’t harsh here and the smoke is nice and mellow, good rich malts.

Bottle at Cambrinus, Brugge - 02/12/12. Mid black with a forthy tan head that clears to the edge and leaves a small film after a few minutes. Nose is roast malt, liqourice, molasses, touch of chocolate. Taste comprises roast malt, chocolate, touch of coffee, leather, some liqourice. Medium bodied, spritzy carbonation - a little overcooked for my liking, roasted finish.

(Draught at Delirium Tap Bar, Brussels, 19 Oct 2012) Black colour with dense, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with black coffee, dark bread and a touch of smoke. Roasted, malty taste with notes of black coffee, cacao, dark rye bread, dark fruit and a mild coffee bitterness. More than medium body, with a light sweetness. Well balanced and tasty. Nice one.
