Bringing sweet flavour to winter mornings, maple syrup not only goes with American pancakes and cappuccino, but also beer. Mad Scientist’s barley wine, with flavours of caramel and toasted brown sugar, have been supplemented by the sweet liqueurs of Canada’s national speciality. In addition, Old King Clancy has an earthy-bitter finish, which is why it can be recommended to those otherwise discouraged by this oft-exaggerated variety.

Barleywine with maple syrup from this leading craft brewery in Budapest, thanks Craftmember for sharing. Mousy, pale yellowish beige, bit irregular, opening head on a misty amber-hued deep chestnutty-bronze coloured beer. Aroma of maple syrup indeed, honey waffles, caramel sauce, walnut liqueur, muscovado sugar, chestnut purée, candied dates, old brown honey, dried fig. Sweet onset, somewhat sticky even due to that maple syrup, candied fig and yellow raisin impressions, softish carb; smooth and vinous body, but suffering a bit from the maple syrup stickiness. Very caramelly and hazelnutty malt core, lingering maple syrup sweetness and nuttiness in the end with a slight herbal hop note and warming, brandy-like alcohol. Interesting, desserty sipper, English style barleywine with an American twist, but for me personally, they had better left it out: the maple syrup makes an otherwise very solid, classic barleywine base overly sweet. I can, however, see the potential in this, and after that imperial stout I had from them a couple of weeks ago, it is clear to me that Mad Scientist masters these old Anglo-Saxon beer styles in a very classic way, the way you very rarely see them anymore. Have an extra point for that.
