Goethe described music as “liquid architecture”, intangible cathedrals of sound that disappear as quickly as they materialize. The mind deconstructed to its most basic function could be characterized as a pattern seeking tool, an engine of prediction geared towards our social bonds and the tactile cycles of our natural surroundings. Our ability to organize the tumult set before us perhaps led to this fluke of joy in sound, but ultimately fate and coincidence seek to describe the same phenomena. Few qualities could be more innate than our fluency in this universal language: before we can even speak our own names, we become entranced with rhythm and melody. Life Without Music is our meditation on the rustic smoked beers of Germany.

Pours dark mahogany into a willi. White head with good retention recedes to pancake surface. Sweet molasses with mild smoke aromas. Thick with sweet molasses and bacon front to back. Medium length sour smoked cherrywood finish. A little disappointed with this one.

Can shared by Johnny. Dark brown to black color, average sized off-white head. Smell and taste malts, malt bitterness, smoky malts, softly bitter in the finish. Quite nice. Well balanced. Solid.

Canned Autumn 2023, drunk 10/15/23. Dark, auburn-tinged hazelnut-mahogany. Medium-sized, dark beige head, moderate retention. Rich brown bread, honey, brown sugar and earthy mineral with light toast and finally some ashen, dry smoke coming on the finish. Clean and aromatic. Soft base malts with some grain from specialty malt, deep, somewhat subtle smoke emerging as dry woodsmoke with more warming. Toffee, brown bread, brown sugar and light molasses all in good balance, with good malt depth and attenuation.
