From our series "Wicked Tales of Scotland" - 4 whisky barrel-aged beers released at the brewery February 2nd 2019.

Whisky Barrel Aged Wee Heavy (Auchentoshan) - 7 months.

As romantic as they may seem, the many castle ruins along the Anglo-Scottish border should only be approached with extreme caution. Because here in the rubble of algae-covered bricks from ancient fallen walls is where the Red Cap reigns. As small and timid as this little goblin-style creature may seem, as fast you should run if you ever meet one. The Red Cap is said to favor ruins of castles that once witnessed violent or gruesome events. Here he will wait for the occasional visitor which he will kill by throwing big pieces of rock at this unfortunate soul. When the target is dead, the Red Cap will soak his cap in his victim’s blood. And since the Red Cap will die if the blood of his victims ever dries out, this little creature is extremely dangerous and always on the prowl for new blood. In spite of our earlier advice to run when encountering a Red Cap, you may be hard pressed to outrun him. Red Caps are speedy little buggers. Instead you should start quoting that Bible you always carry in your back pocket, or hold up a cross - only these actions will drive the Red Cap away. He will then disappear in a flash of flames, leaving behind only a big tooth. Why exactly a tooth, nobody knows - but a tooth it always is.

Bottle, 9.5%. Dark brown colour, seems clear. Small frothy tan head. The flavour is very malty, has some vanilla and quite a lot of smokey whiskey. Fairly boozy finish, and burns a bit, but is also nicely warming.

Bottle. Pours clear dark brown with airy but stable light tan head. Clear aroma of fruit and yeast, with notes of malt and touches of hops and barrel. Bitterish, turfy flavour with notes of barrel and malt and touches of yeast. Barrellike aftertaste with estery notes and acidic touches. Warming alcohol presence. Decent.

Shared with Marko and Ogi, thanks. Dark brown, small off-white head. The aroma is malt, toast at first, spice, whiskey nicely present, wood and finally some cherry. Whiskey very obvious in flavour, wood and herbs in the back. Medium body, oily texture, moderate carbonation, moderate finish. Overwhelming.

Bottle, thanks Henrik! Lot 1813. With Ogi and Hrabren. Fruity aroma, summer sweet red apple compote, maltiness. Sweet malty taste, red apples, light peat, smooth, clean, the peat actually detracts a little. Solid enough.

Bottle, 0.33l. Aroma of caramel, whiskey, dried fruit and licorice. Pours hazy dark brown color with thin creamy tan-like head, floating yeast particles and sparkling appearance. Taste starts with medium sweet caramel, toasted malt and whiskey, follows by wood, dried fruity acidity and roasted malt, mouthfeel is thick, while finish is mild bitter. Full body, thick creamy texture and average carbonation in palate. Bloody wee...

Medium cream head over reddish-shot black beer. Lightly roasted nose, alcohol & fusels. Whisky is very obvious; dark fruit syrup, raisins. Sweet, with a bit of raw spirit flavour, enhancing the sweetness. Dark red & dried fruit (raisins, plums, dates...). Again fusel-y. Sweet, but neither cloying nor sticky. Fierce alcoholwarming, medium to well-bodied, medium carbonation. Very slightly viscous. Heat keeps lingering backthroat. Sweetness is restrained, kept from stickyness. But the overall character is not exactly excuberant. Quite decent, in the end.
