Developed from our classic wee heavy, Meteor, this is a powerful yet well-balanced beer, rich brown in hue, with a medium-heavy body full of dark malt and biscuit tones.
A light touch of oak smoke leads on the nose, while the palate explores the full range of caramel character, from subtle honey to rich toffee. Long conditioning on toasted oak adds further depth to the caramel complexity, and nudges Perseid into the deep space between beer and whisky.

- 1 point for the irritating superfluous wax. Russet-cream head over russet tinted, almost black beer. Chocolate, liquorice, japwater; some mild roast, roasted grains. Liquorice, japwater, preserved orangepeel. Some alcohol in the background, if for a 10.4% beer, meek. Roast. Surprisingly thin MF for such a massive beer; more than a bit sticking. Disappointing. Le plumage ne vaut pas le ramage. Japwater & some alcohol.

Extra strong Scotch (or 'wee heavy') by this microbrewery in Budapest, intended as a hybrid between Scotch and barleywine; 75 cl bottle shared at Huzaar in Ghent. Pale greyish beige, moussy to creamy, slowly opening head, misty caramel brown robe with ruby red glow. Aroma of dry caramel, candied cherries, liquorice candy, dried fig, pecan nuts, brandy, toffee, raisins, dusty straw bales, tea. Sweetish, clean onset, dried figs, candied cherries and a hint of old raisins, spritzy carbonation (especially for a barleywine) and a tad thinnish in body, probably due to alcohol. Caramelly to lightly toffeeish, nutty and vaguely toasty malt sweet core with very light malt bitterness to it, lingering a bit in the end (as befits a Scotch); caramel sweetness and notes of liquorice and sweet cashew nuts prevail in the end, slightly accentuated by a mild floral hoppiness and more so by brandy-like alcohol, which eventually becomes quite explicit. A tad too boozy and liquorice-forward perhaps, but tasty and sleek, with a main character much more reminiscent of Scotch than of English or American barleywine.
