Bottle @ home. Clear dark red-brown color with a huge rough off-white head. Aroma is malts, candy sugar. Taste malts, sweetness, light toffee, candy sugar. Decent to medium body, bit fizzy carbonation but not too annoying. Quite solid.

Dark brown colour with lasting thin head. Aroma and flavour have sweet dried fruits like raisins and dates. Underlying bready yeastiness and slight gingerbread spiciness. Finish has a nice burnt, treacle-like bitterness.

33cl Bottle from AH. Dark brown colour, huge beige head. Aroma of candy, sweet malts, dark fruits, light spicy. Flavour is medium sweet to sweet, malty, light spicy, star anise, coriander seed, dark fruits, decent balancing bitterness, bittersweet finish. Medium to full bodied, slightly alcoholic. Firm carbonation.

8 3 8 3 16Bottle at Kim Jong Un Buurtcentrum, Zaandam. Hazy brown with a tan head. Aroma of malt, floral notes, herbs, caramel, overripe dark fruits, dried fruits and yeast. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter.

Five years after the release of their first beer, a dubbel-type Belgian style ale, the trappist monks of De Kievit now present this stronger version, in the best of trappist brewing traditions, at 10% ABV a quadrupel by definition. Bottle from RobenRob, shared with my girlfriend. Opens with an agressive hissing sound but no gushing; inches thick, rocky, pale yellowish beige, cobweb-lacing, bit irregular, slowly collapsing head over a lightly misty, deep dark bronze beer with mahogany to wine red hue, the haze perturbed by a whirlwind of fierce sparkling rising up from the bottom and sustaining the head. Rich and luscious nose of caramel candy, nougat, 'pepernoot', raisin, dried fig, gingerbread, strong clove-like phenols matching well with the overall profile, old liquorish candy, pecan nut pie, wet toast, chewing gum, vermouth, rum, walnut liqueur. Sweet onset, filled with fig- and raisin-like impressions as can be expected from a good quad, some dried banana and light sourishness (blackberry), strong and fizzy carbonation perhaps a bit on the high side for the style, but still not hindering a very full, rounded mouthfeel; thick caramelly maltiness with pleasantly walnutty edges and even a - for style - relatively pronounced toasty bitterish aspect in the end, enhanced by herbal, tea-ish hops and a long, very rum-like alcoholic afterglow, adorned with ongoing malt sweetness and clove- and liquorish-like spicy phenols. Very warming, rich beer on a chilly autumn night, perhaps a tad too warming even, as the alcohol eventually becomes a little bit wry and tiring; other than that, though, this is a beautiful quadrupel in my book and a tasteful and self-confident addition to the ever-growing stock of trappist beers.

Huge dark-cream head over nearly black beer. Perfumey, sweet, marzipan, frangipane... and soap, rosewater. Too sweet... Taste is seriously different, drier, woodier, even a bit spicy. Finish reverts to the over-sweet, marzipan-like flavour. Creamy, smooth, alcoholheat, nearly chewy. Head remains throughout, contributing to the creamy feel. Sweet, sweet... OK.

Pours dark, clear, copper brown. Médium to big, rather white head. Smell is sweet, mild caramel, bit earthy. Distant chocolate. Taste is full, bit bitter, intense, bit roasty, mild chocolate. Some caramel, malty. Rich in flavor. But overpowered by extreme carbonation. Médium body.
