FAMILIAL BLEND 1: Imperial Buckwheat Stout aged in Old Fitzgerald and Blis Maple Bourbon Barrels
Three years ago we brewed this beer as part of a 2 part release with our good friend Eric Padilla, who at that time was working for MORE Brewing. We thought this would be a celebratory release for our mutual friend, and all around incredible human in the beer community, Fitz, to commemorate his upcoming retirement. Well, things changed a bit when Fitz was diagnosed with cancer, and the idea of a celebration didnt seem fitting. He has since gone through chemotherapy, and is thankfully cancer free (but for some reason decided to go back to work, rather than retire...) So now what to do with the beer?.. We thought it was only fitting that a beer dedicated to one of the most selfless people we know should be used to do some good, and so on Fitz's request we will be donating from this beer to help one of his friend's who just recently started going through cancer treatment. (we will post more about this soon, along with a donation link for anyone so inclined).
And after all that, we decided to name the beer Familial. We have been fortunate to meet so many great people in and around the craft beer industry, and some of them, like Fitz and Eric, have become an extended family.

Bottle from Livonia Liquor. Pours a deep brown to black with a finger of brown head that dissipates. Bourbon forward nose with notes of vanilla, oak wood, and strawberry-like buckwheat notes. Dark chocolate on the palate with more bourbon next to red fruit buckwheat notes. Maple notes seem light on this one. Drying finish with more red fruit, bourbon, oak and vanilla. This is a really great stout with buckwheat being something you don't see a lot. Of course it's from Transient.
