Despite Simplex being an ale, it has all the characteristics of an old-styled pils. It is a blond, unfiltered, unpasteurized, hoppy and bitter beer that remains low in alcohol. Resulting in a straw blonde, highly drinkable beer with plenty of flavor and character.

Taste: Refreshing, light and with a firm bitterness

Re-rate, on tap at E9. Light gold, thin head. Dry, herbal, such a classic, refined hop note. Just bone dry, bitter, austere really. Yum. So much better than the first time I had it.

330mL bottle, pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out straw, lightly sweet cereal malt, and biscuity malt. Flavour is very clean, with straw, crisp biscuity malt, some hoppy bitterness, and cereal graininess. Quite astringently bitter, with a very dry finish. Pretty solid for a kolsch.

Hazy, yellow-golden colored, medium white frothy head, good lacing. Aroma is of some malt, bit biscuit and some grain, medium hoppy leaf, spicy and herbal, straw. Taste is medium-light sweet malt, bit grain and some biscuit, moderate hoppiness, herbal, straw and bit spicy, medium bitterness, quite dry finish. Medium to light bodied, lively carbonation. This could easily replace most Pils in my book. (bottle, Bierhalle Deconinck, Vichte)

Keg at The Mermaid, Hackney. It pours clear yellow with a small white cap. The aroma is pretty, fresh, grassy, straw, doughy white bread and floral notes The taste is crisp, dry, fairly bitter, green, grassy, herbal, peppery spice, floral accents, straw and some white bread with a dry finish..light body and soft/fine carbonation. Well rounded and crushable. Works well.

Bottle. Hazy dulled gold with a white head. Aroma of lemons and oranges, chewed crackers. Palate is cleaner than expected from the aroma and the taste is full of typically punchy De Ranke hops - citrusy and floral with mild spices. Finish is nicely bitter. Label says it's not a pils - it's not a KΓΆlsch either ffs. [3.4]Should have let it sit for more than a day. This one is cleaner and very much like a toned down XX Bitter.
