Barleywine Ale with Mango, Guava, Passionfruit and Coconut Aged in Bourbon Barrels
Hey kid! What'd you do, jump ship? Amicable waves of tropical fruit and freshly toasted coconut lap against the oaken hull of the S.S. Straight Jacket in this summery take on our beloved Barleywine. Familiar notes of malty-sweet stone fruit are flanked by ripe, juicy mango and guava while the bracing acidity of passionfruit pilots toward a focused definition in each sip. 15% ABV

Can from Tavour. Pours clear dark mahogany with a slight tan head. Aroma of mixed tropicals over malt and heat. Full bodied. Flavor matches the aroma. More or less. Really dark malt, heat, incredibly complex fruit flavors - at least I can pick out fig and plum. Wind astringency in the finish.

Panda at home, thanks to Kenneth, 13/01/24. Mahogany brown with a fast escaping beige head. Nose is big bourbonics, ripe fruit esters, dates, figs, brown sugar melt, coconut shavings. Taste comprises fruit cake mix, bourbon, figgy jam, spice, molasses, booze tunes, toffee fudge, light jammy red berry note. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a balanced rising boost. Solid Life.

Can. Clear deep amber beer, good bubbly pale tan head. Smooth and semi dry palate, decent fine carbonation. Smooth rich malts, creamy sweet with a decent toffee streak. Punchy tropical fruits, good mango and passion fruit, guava underneath, the coconut is quite low level and soft. The bourbon barrel dominates the back end, rich and a little spicy boozy. The fruity bourbon barrel blends well with the added tropical fruits. Smooth finish. Okay! I didn't have high hopes for a tropical fruit adjunct BBA barleywine, but, and this is what I love about beer, it does work very well. Always a pleasant surprise to be pleasantly surprised.

Brewery draught, 12/2/23. Clear, dark bronze-amber. Small, beige head quickly to ring. Very fruity, mellowed on the coconut with honey, vanilla, caramel and gentle oak giving a very aromatic and clean, if rather sweet nose. No alcohol noted. As others say, it's sweet, I don't think overly so. Coconut not overdone with vanilla and mild oak, no real bourbon. Wouldn't hate more assertive barrel character. But I don't find the maltiness or fruitiness to be problematic.

12oz can from Tavour. Dark amber pour, a few buubles that disappear. Aroma is malty, pit fruit, and some booze. Taste is malty, raisins, fig, tobacco and a pleasnt warmth.

Viscous, sweet, boozy. Oh dear. Tart mango, red tropical fruit, caramel, barrel. What? A bit too sweet, the fruity tartness is...interesting. Not bad and a fun try but would be far better without the fruit. Nice.
