Calm Before the Storm came from a quest for a warm weather alternative to our Victory at Sea Imperial Porter. Like its more robust cousin, we infuse a punch of flavor using cold brewed Caffé Calabria coffee and a hint of vanilla. But this time, we added it to a lighter-bodied golden cream ale. The end result is a surprisingly bright, coffee-forward beer that’s perfectly refreshing.

12 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 11/15/15. Pours a mostly clear orange color with an off white head. Sweetened coffee aroma and flavor that has roast and lactose components to it as well. This is smooth, easy drinking beer with a somewhat lively carbonation. Kind of a light version of Regular Coffee, at least from the way it mixes sweetened coffee and lactose flavors into a lighter colored beer. It has a bit more of a roast component on the nose than you might expect from a beer that looks like this too. The sweetness works very well without getting cloying. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Bottle. Strong coffee and vanilla caramel malt aroma (did I mention coffee?). Golden yellow with with small head. Sweet creamy vanilla coffee, caramel malt and mildly bitter hay flavor. Nice body. This is one way to improve a cream ale.

12oz bottle pours with a clear deep gold body that has a copper core and supports a thin light tan head. The aroma offers up a good load of dark roasted coffee and then some vague sweeter notes in the background. The taste delivers a pleasing blend of sweet malts linked to a thin ribbon of vanilla that sweeten up the bold dark roasted coffee. It stays dark and toasty with coffee and various sweet notes right into the finish.
