Calm Before the Storm came from a quest for a warm weather alternative to our Victory at Sea Imperial Porter. Like its more robust cousin, we infuse a punch of flavor using cold brewed Caffé Calabria coffee and a hint of vanilla. But this time, we added it to a lighter-bodied golden cream ale. The end result is a surprisingly bright, coffee-forward beer that’s perfectly refreshing.

Draught @ Stag’s Head. Clear rich yellow appearance with medium sized creamy whitish head, very faint malt aroma, low carbonation, slightly sweet malty taste, creamy body, medium malty finish with slightly hops bitterness. Very smooth and drinkable.

Draft at Churchkey. Crystal clear bright golden color, white head. Aroma has toasted brown bread, cocoa powder (a pleasant surprise), caramel. Taste has malted milk balls, malt forward. One of the tastiest cream ales I’ve had.

On tap at Man in the Moon. Golden with a white head. Aroma and taste of vanilla, some light roasted malt, caramel and light fruit. On the light side with low carbonation. A bit strange to be honest.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 9/22/2015. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big dark roasted coffee, cocoa, vanilla, cream, honey, cracker, bread, light pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance of coffee/vanilla, bready malt, and light earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark roasted coffee, cocoa, vanilla, cream, honey, cracker, bread, light pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Light herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of roasted coffee, cocoa, vanilla, cream, honey, cracker, bread, and hebral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic robustness and balance of coffee/vanilla, bready malt, and light earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky, and slightly sticky mouthfeel that is awesome. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding coffee cream ale. All around awesome robustness and balance of coffee/vanilla, bready malt, and light earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

Ballast Point Calm Before the storm on tap at Galmegi Haeundae. Crystal clear copper pour with an off-white head of foam. Big coffee & cream aroma that’s quite nice. The taste is a bit on the sweet side but does give you the same solid sweet milk coffee flavor. Good stuff. Kind of reminds me of Master of Disguise.

Keg at Babajan, Stockholm. Clear amber, small head. Caramelly vanilla aroma. Mid sweet with medium body and clean, hard mouthfeel. Metall, caramel, milk. Resinous metallic finish. Off-putting and edgy, almost like the Chinese Kefir Milk Beer. Undrinkable

Sample at Daily Growler Powell during the Pumpkin Carving Party on 10/22/2015. Clear deep golden color with a medium white head that evaporates quickly to a film. Spotty lacing. Aroma of coffee, vanilla and malt. Light-bodied with flavors of roasted coffee, vanilla, malt and wheat. The finish is roasty and sweet with a vanilla coffee aftertaste. Above average overall.
