Expect the unexpected. The fierce bite of roasted malt meets the gnarly, tropical bitterness of new world hops to offer a balanced, complex and refreshing Black IPA with bags of flavour.

Black malt, chocolate malt and flaked oats join Maris Otter pale malt to add roasted and chocolate notes, giving the beer an intense dark appearance. Masses of Cascade, Columbus, Chinook and Citra hops create woody pine, biting citrus and bright tropical flavours.

[50cl bottle from Waitrose, Bracknell.] An opaque cola brown pour with a fast fading white head; sweet aroma with blackcurrants and berries; bitter tasting at first with charred grains, then some berry fruit and a touch of chocolate powder; leading to a gentle, lasting grainy bitterness to finish. Very pleasant.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from Waitrose. Pours clear brown with a tight, creamy tan head. Lightly sweet with mellow roast, nips of dry cocoa, earth, burnt pine, earth and leaves. Light bodied with average carbonation. Fairly clean finish, restrained flavours, nips or orange peel, roast, earth. Enjoyable.

Bottle from Tesco, Brooklands. Aroma combines chocolate, coffee, herbs and a hint of liquorice. Darkest brown. Opaque. Foamy off-white head soon recedes. Medium-heavy bitter. Liquorice and herbs. Coffee. Slightly metallic. All a tad muted. Light. Thin. Average carbonation. Long dry somewhat astringent finish. Alright. A damp squib of a Black IPA.
