440ml can bought at Wobbly Aleways in Newcastle. Shared with Finn on a TransPennine Express train from Newcastle to Manchester. Pours a large, fawn-coloured head that laces quite well, black in the glass. Inviting toasted malts on the nose, smoothly roasted. Fine balanced flavours of nutty chocolate with a distant backdrop of coffee to a smoothly roasted ending. Medium bodied. Tasty. (21.03.2024).

3/4/2024. Can at The Arbor House, Ipswich. Pours black with a frothy beige head. Aroma is black coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, treacle, tar. Moderate sweetness, medium roasted developing bitterness. Medium plus body, smooth, average to soft carbonation. Some sweetness came through to finish balancing it nicely. Well done.

On tap at Ship Aground, Stafford. Pours almost black with minimal tan head. There’s oats and roasted malts in the aroma, alongside hints of lactose. Roast malts and oats again in the mouth, plus hints of coffee, liquorice and alcohol. Finish is quite bitter and slightly boozy. This is a decent stout.

Can at home in Hackney - picked up from Cambridge Wine Merchants. Pours black-brown with a modest, creamy khaki head. Lightly sweet with restrained roast, rounded dark malts, smooth chocolate notes, nips of tangy raisins and earthy bitterness. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Nicely balanced finish, more rich and rounded dark malt character, subtle dark fruits, cocoa, a little earth and ash. This one was a real grower. Solid.

Can thanks to allmyvinyl. Appearance - close to opaque black with a proportionate, beige to tan head. Nose - chocolate, roasted nuts and something a bit like marshmallow or red fruits. Taste - creamy chocolate, hazelnuts and roast again. Palate - smooth in texture, medium bodied, balanced and lightly roasty finish. Overall - very nice, particularly since ABV is not particularly high.
