Inspired by ancient recipes,Russian Imperial Stout has absorbed the atmosphere of the 19th century. The beer has an intense, rich flavor thanks to a phenomenal combination of ingredients and an outstanding complex aroma that comes from the use of roasted and caramel malts in the recipe.

Shared 14.9 oz. bottle. Pours almost black with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, licorice, dark fruit, and chocolate. Taste follows nose with some metallic notes and and an unknown flavor that seems a little bit off. Earthy. Actually not as bad as I thought it might be.

Bottle from Monument in Concord, CA. Pours dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of molasses and/or kandi with dark malt. Med body or better. Flavor is treacle, toffee, dark malt, hop? Definitely fruit - makes me think berry. A bit earthy. Heat isn’t really noticeable. An interesting version of IS. Dangerously drinkable. Seems sessionable til reality strikes. Hard.

Thrifty Beverages, Brooklyn bottle ($2.89): this is cheap and therefore probably worth getting. Pours near black with a beige head. Aroma is chocolate, hops, roast, some molasses and vestiges of Baltic Porter in there as well. Tste is somewhat butter and a bit sweet. Roasty. Not perfected. Kind of janky. Not the worst Imperial Stout from Russia that I had though...

500 mL bottle. Black, with a medium, tan, bubbly head. The aroma is toffee, syrup, light cocoa, and cream. Sweet and malty, with a fair, roasted bitterness. Medium to heavy body, syrupy, chalky, and oily. This is a reasonably tasty imperial stout, but lacks complexity.

440 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 7/17/2015. Pours clear nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 2 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toast, dark bread, nuttiness, raisin, plum, fig, light licorice/smoke, herbal, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, fruity yeast, and light earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toast, dark bread, nuttiness, raisin, plum, fig, light licorice/smoke, herbal, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Moderate herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toast, dark bread, nuttiness, dark fruit, and yeast/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, fruity yeast, and light earthy hop flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Russian Imperial stout style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, fruity yeast, and light earthy hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
