New addition to the ever-evolving Zenne y Frontera range, among 3 Fonteinen’s most coveted and most highly praised achievements of the past years (since 2015), this one containing lambics aged on different kinds of sherry barrels. Snow white, medium thick, tiny-bubbled, open head on a warm, misty, orange-glowing golden robe. Aroma of pronounced oak wood in a very ‘fresh’ and furniture-like way, lots of (primarily dry) sherry, lemon rind, dried apricot, lemonbalm, young mugwort leaf, unripe oranges, walnut oil, green apples. ‘Malse’ onset, soft ‘stonefruity’ sourness with hints of unripe orange and gooseberry as well, minerally carbonation; smooth and vinous mouthfeel, strong tannic woodiness from the middle onwards over a bread-crusty malt core, fruity lactic acidity and mild lambic esters, increasing in the end when the sherry comes in to highlight the fruitiness and adorn it with oxidation and herbal effects vaguely reminiscent of dried thyme, bergamot, lemonbalm and oxidized Maitrank – until the wood, lambic sours and lactic dryness take over again in a long, drying, rich finish. The sherry is pronounced but well-integrated – and the fact that four basic sherries are featured here, makes this one kind of ‘complete’ and richer than the 70 variant released at the same time. Beautiful – worthy as an addition to this glorious range of world-class lambics.
