What better way to toast the fall than to have a bottle of this formidable, dual character brew. At first smooth with mellow overtones of sweet berry fruit, a bite of bitterness suddenly cuts through, long, deep and lingering. Brewed with Rye Malt, it is naturally "blood red" in colour. Unlike the mythical wolf-like creature said to roam the bleak moorland surrounding Newcastle, this is real, so consider yourself warned!

33cl bottle from ICA Storo. Pours clear copper coloured with a small, off-white head. Malty and caramelly aroma with som lightly hoppy notes and hints of toast. Sweet and malty with a mild, but decent enough bitterness. Nothing to write home about, but quite drinkable.

Bottle. It’s a clear, dark amber to copper colored beer, topped by a small, dense, off-white to light beige head leaving some lacings. The aroma is sure on the malty side, with a faint spiced touch and a cheesy hint. Some chocolate hints too. It’s full-bodied and a tad too much carbonated, quite dry as well, even though there’s a sweetish touch in the flavor. There’s an underlying bitterness in this one, lasting for a good while, but I don’t think there’s enough of it to deal with the bready malts and chocolate hints. Some hints of tea in there too actually. Overall, a beer I can’t really decide whether I like or not, but it tastes quite decent, just don’t think I could do a session of it. 130829

Pour is a dark brown with a average tan head. Aroma is a decent caramel with some roasted nuts. Flavor is again roasted nuts, not much else and kinda watery. Not horrible but not overly flavorful.

bottle - Clear dark amber with a light tan head. It smells mainly of caramel malt with some grain. The flavor is sweet caramel, a touch of hops, and that’s about it. Light to medium bodied. Rather mediocre. So far I’m unimpressed with Newcastle’s efforts to get into the craft beer market.

12 oz bottle. Pours clear brownish-orange (definitely not "blood red") with a medium beige head with good retention and lace. Aroma consists of stinky grain, overripe dark fruit, caramel. Taste starts out sweet before a light bitterness sets in. Watery and bland. Creamy mouthfeel and average carbonation. This werewolf should be extinct! I’m sure it will be by year’s end.

Bottle. Pours dark red with medium lasting whitish head. Aroma is rye and wet paper. Flavour is rye, some hop and more paper. Finish is an unpleasant paper/cardboard finish.

Bottle sent for review. I overuse the term "earthy" when describing English ales, but this one fits the description easily. Smell in the glass brings up rye spice, a little bit of phenol, or perhaps just some extra malt going around. Reddish amber color of many harvest ales. Taste pretty much delivers as advertised. Rich and malty. Okay, no "berry" in my opinion, but again, loamy, with a bit of peat and nut brown malt. There are some comfy English hops as well. And the rye does offer a nice spicy character, although it may be contributing to some phenol in the finish as well. Still, it goes down nicely and is worth seeking out as a fall brew. Might be comparable to this year’s version of Goose Harvest.
