A California-style IPA with a Belgian twist
Stone Cali-Belgique IPA features a complex and surprising combination of flavors, but behind the fancy title is the simply delicious Stone IPA. The addition of a carefully selected strain of Belgian yeast adds banana and spice notes to the hoppy brightness of our flagship IPA. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.
This beer was created in 2008 when we used Stone IPA as the propagation wort for fermenting our Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale. We liked what the Belgian yeast flavors added to Stone IPA, so we kept brewing it and eventually released it as one of our year-round beers.

Can. An interesting Belgian - IPA hybrid. Banana line is quite thin, but really makes this IPA interesting. Worth exploring maybe but not really my style.

Can at home. A very nice beer that I would describe as an American IPA, but with more body and interest. Which is probably what they were intending. A very nice, bitter hop flavour with a smooth mouthfeel. A dark colour, stong hop aroma and a welcome hit of alcohol. This is definitely one to revisit.

Umiarkowany cytrusowo-bananowy aromat. W smaku najpierw trochę west-coastu z belgijskimi estrami, w posmaku dosyć miła wyraźna goryczka i właśnie belgijskie estry.

Draught, German version, at Bootleggers Craft Beer Bare, Stone tap takeover. Patchy white head over a near-clear warm golden body. Herbal hops on the nose, mid-sweet. Apricot, plums and mid-sweet grainy malts to the taste character. Drying bitterness to the ending. Fine bodied. Pleasant drinking. (Copenhagen 10.05.2017).

On keg, half pint shared with Finn at Stormbird, Camberwell. Clear orange-gold body, clingy lacing, low white head. Floral hops on the nose. Blended taste of fresh and dried fruits alongside yeasty fruitiness to the ending. Soft in the mouth and well bodied. Tasty (London 29.11.2015).

Can, 6.9% from Fakta. Good fruity and citric hop aroma along with notes of fat Belgian yeast. Almost clear golden colour. Good stable white head. The flavour is a lot like the aroma. Has a good fruity, grapefruity hop note. Also some yeasty notes, Belgian I suppose. Good clean bitterness.

Can from Asda. Bright gold in colour, with a short-lived white head and plenty of carbonation. Yeasty aroma, with some stone fruits and pineapple, plus some grassy hops. Easy drinking for the ABV, with some juicy fruit gum, crisp malts, touch of apricot and moderately dry finish. An enjoyable beer.

Büchse: Golden, hazy, medium-sized stable and lacy off-white head; moderate sweet-bitter lemony to flowery hoppy nose with pale malt and traces of yeast in the background; moderate to solid sweet-bitter flavour, medium bodied and pretty soft; lingering drier citric-lemony finish with a distinctive pale-malty counterpart. Well balanced stuff, even though the Belgian yeast is barely detectable...

330ml can from Tesco - Clear yellow body, rocky white top. Nose is citrus, grass, with the Belgian yeast there as a distraction. Taste is a muddled mix, too sharp, with the België feeling lost in the pithy fruits. Underwhelming.
