A California-style IPA with a Belgian twist

Stone Cali-Belgique IPA features a complex and surprising combination of flavors, but behind the fancy title is the simply delicious Stone IPA. The addition of a carefully selected strain of Belgian yeast adds banana and spice notes to the hoppy brightness of our flagship IPA. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

This beer was created in 2008 when we used Stone IPA as the propagation wort for fermenting our Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale. We liked what the Belgian yeast flavors added to Stone IPA, so we kept brewing it and eventually released it as one of our year-round beers.

330 ml can. Pours with a cloudy, pale golden color and a nice white head. Wow, the nose is strange: overripe bananas and citrus fruits, belgian yeast and something decayed. Taste is slighlty sweet, less bananas than expected, yeast amd some malts. The biiterness at the finish is very nice.

Hazy pale amber colour, small frothy white head, half-way lasting, good lacing. Aroma pale malts, orange, peach, biscuit, lemon grass, light ginger. Taste medium sweet and bitter, malty, fruity, biscuit, spicy notes. Dry bittersweet aftertaste, fruity and spicy notes, bit resinous at the end. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, very nice but not completely convincing.

Near white thin head on a lemon coloured body. Sweet citrus fruity aroma. Medium bodied, airy on the palate, sharp on the back. Lots of bitter yet malty flavours. Grapefruit, yeasty, citrus & slightly acidic on the back.

Can from Tesco, Cromwell Road, Earls Court, London. An amber coloured pour with a medium white head on top. Hoppy, yeasty, caramel aroma. Tastes quite Belgian, yeasty, fruity, some caramel and pine, slight sweetness. Not too impressed with these German brewed Stone beers, give me the California brews any day.

Not my favorite Stone beer, a weird combination of Belgian yeast and Stone hoppiness that doesn’t really do justice to either. Citric hops offer up a counterbalance to yeasty esters, yet the IPA-dom seems subdued and the Belgian sweetness feels strange next to the oily hops. Texture’s off too. Not bad but weird. (9/2010, BA)

33 cl. can, poured in to a Tulip. Brewed in Berlin. Hazy, golden-amber colour with a medium sized, fading white head. Fruity aroma where the Belgian yeasts is showing: Sweet exotic fruits, banana, apricot, peaches. Citrus fruits, bubblegum, floral hops. Taste is bitter - far less bitter than the regular IPA. Medium bodied with a creamy texture and an average carbonation. Finishes dry and bitter with sweet, exotic fruits, yeasts and citrus. An interesting take on the American IPA:. However, I prefer the original.
