A California-style IPA with a Belgian twist

Stone Cali-Belgique IPA features a complex and surprising combination of flavors, but behind the fancy title is the simply delicious Stone IPA. The addition of a carefully selected strain of Belgian yeast adds banana and spice notes to the hoppy brightness of our flagship IPA. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

This beer was created in 2008 when we used Stone IPA as the propagation wort for fermenting our Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale. We liked what the Belgian yeast flavors added to Stone IPA, so we kept brewing it and eventually released it as one of our year-round beers.

As advertised and really tasty. The Belgian yeast works effectively with the citrus and tropical fruit hops to create a classic Belgian IPA. The malt backbone is sweet and blends well with the more prominent hop and yeast elements. Really excellent balances for a brewery that doesn’t do a lot of Belgian beers.

Botled. Poured a nice amber. Small fizzy head. Taste was flowery hops plus a fairly spicy ending. Not bad not too awesome.

Bottle @ Fox and Hounds, Aabenraa. Unclear golden body with a nice, creamy white head. Nice and refreshing aroma of citric fruit, orange and some estery Belgium yeast. Flavor is nice and refreshing as well, citric fruit, zest, fruity yeast, oranges and moderate bitterness. Could also go as a hoppy saison. Medium body and nice aftertaste that feels a bit sharper in flavor. Nice one, getting better better when drinking more of it.

big hoppy nose, loads of citrus, and quite a bit of fruit! This is basicly like a west coast IPA, but with loads of fruit, and yeast notes. Its not awful, but really, not my bag.

Can at home. Aroma is malt, spicy peppery Belgian yeast, fruity and floral hops, touch of pine resin, some bubblegum. Flavour is above moderate sweet and medium bitter. Body is medium. Pretty strong Belgian profile with the typical clean Stone hops and malts. Nice.
