A California-style IPA with a Belgian twist

Stone Cali-Belgique IPA features a complex and surprising combination of flavors, but behind the fancy title is the simply delicious Stone IPA. The addition of a carefully selected strain of Belgian yeast adds banana and spice notes to the hoppy brightness of our flagship IPA. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

This beer was created in 2008 when we used Stone IPA as the propagation wort for fermenting our Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale. We liked what the Belgian yeast flavors added to Stone IPA, so we kept brewing it and eventually released it as one of our year-round beers.

33cl can, brewed in Berlin, from Beer52.com. A pale amber pour with a loose white head; pleasant aroma of coriander and yeast; dry and crisp with a grassy bitterness and lots of corinader; then a long, dry finish with some warming spice and a rounded herbal bitterness. A definite Belgian influence.

Pours clear gold with a frothy white head. Aroma is grapefruit, citrus, with distinct notes of yeast and spice. An enticing prelude. The taste is bittersweet up front with a candy bubblegum flavor defining the sweeter side. This is swept away going into the finish, which is defined solely by a hoppy bitterness that can feel astringent at times. As with the normal IPA from Stone, I am a fan of the palate which is creamy, sticky, smooth and yet not overly heavy. Apart from the finish, which is merely mediocre, a very nice brew.

Draught @ Fox & Hounds, Sønderborg. Pours nearly clear straw with airy but stable white head. Clear aroma of hops and citrus, with some fruity and floral notes and hints of yeast. Intense, bitter and citric flavour of American hops, with notes of fruit and Belgian yeast and touches of malt. Lingering, dry aftertaste. An okay Calibelgian experiment but I prefer the regular IPA from Stone.

MBR. Thanks Ludo! Clear golden, white head.Dry pear taste, nicely phenolic. Some citrus. Vague bubblegum. Saison aroma. Nicely mixed taste, soft maltiness, caramel, bubblegum, sweetish banana, phenols on peppery bitterness going to a long herbal aftertaste. Dryyyy. Very interesting stuff.

CAN 33 CL. Hazy deep golden, soapy white head. The aroma is right in the middle between a fruity and spicy Belgian Ale and citrusy hops. Same with the taste - hints of stone fruit and spicy alcohols on one hand, sweet citrus and caramel malts on the other. Spicy peppery bitterness. Not bad, not sure the hybrid improves on either of the original styles.
