A California-style IPA with a Belgian twist
Stone Cali-Belgique IPA features a complex and surprising combination of flavors, but behind the fancy title is the simply delicious Stone IPA. The addition of a carefully selected strain of Belgian yeast adds banana and spice notes to the hoppy brightness of our flagship IPA. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.
This beer was created in 2008 when we used Stone IPA as the propagation wort for fermenting our Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale. We liked what the Belgian yeast flavors added to Stone IPA, so we kept brewing it and eventually released it as one of our year-round beers.

On tap at Bevog Who Cares Festival, 2016. Pours golden with white head. Malty, spicy, perfumy, yeasty, soft carbonation, medium bodied. Lacks hoppiness and bitterness. A disappointment to be honest.

Im Glas gold, filtriert. In der Nase herrlich fruchtig, cremig, Orange, Mango, lecker. Im Trunk fruchtig, alkoholisch, bitter, nach hinten stärker werden, matt, komplex. Könnte runder sein.

Can, from Berlin. Nose is fruity Belgian esters, lime, banana, hint of lemon, grassy, strawberry, hint of white peach. Taste is banana, cream, biscuity malt, fruity esters leading to big cloves, caramel, a floral, lime, grapefruit rind hop resin finish. Mouthfeel is slick. A very accomplished beer, which delivers on the premise perfectly.

(can, 33cl) Clear, golden colour with a blond mid-sized foamy head. Lemony and citric aroma with hints of grapefruit, zesty and flowery accents. Moderately bitter and delicately sweet flavour, medium bodied with a modest carbonation. Dry malty base with shades of biscuits and subdued hints of caramel, accompanied by a present citric and slightly flowery hops character, including a whiff of resin underneath; dry, and moderately bitter hoppy finish with a mildly sweet malty backbone and citric, slightly zesty and mildly spicy flavours in the aftertaste. Likeable Belgian interpretation, but I prefer the “normal one”. 15.X.16

Can at the Draft House Milton Keynes. Mid gold, clear with little visible carbonation. A small film of white head. Funky smell with a touch of alcohol and a strong biscuit base. Hints of banoffee pie. Sweet taste with alcohol to the fore. Notes of banana and candy sugar yeast in the long finish. Aggressive carbonation is still pleasant. A nicely composed, funky yeasty little IPA.

0.33 l can (Stone Berlin, brewed with Mosaic instead of Chinook) from ’Biermuda’, best before May 2017. Clear, orangeish amber with a large, frothy, almost stable, white head. Sweetish-fruity, slightly herbal-grassy, dank and a bit yeasty-spicy aroma of mango, marijuana, lemongrass, some ginger and a touch of honey. A bit sweetish, already slightly bitter, fruity, dank and herbal-grassy taste of mango, orange, some honey, a touch of ginger and some notes of acetone, followed by a medium long, rather dry-bitter, slightly grassy and a bit yeasty-spicy, peppery finish. Medium body, slightly effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Nice, but a bit off, doesn’t feel round.

On tap @ What’s Brewing, Stavanger. Pours clear golden, with a big rocky head. Aroma is tart wooden yeast, with fruity hoppy notes of peaches, apricots and citrusy notes. Medium body, with soft carbonation. Flavour is hoppy, with citrusy notes of orange peel and grapefruit, as well as some malts with biscuits. Lingering herbal hops in the finish.

On tap at What?s Brewing Beer Festival 2016, Stavanger. Pours clear deep golden with white head. Aroma of fruity esters, some sulfur, flowers, some grass. Taste is very bitter, almost astringent. Some sweetness, dry mouth feel.
