Clear brown with with tiny short lasting head. Sweet vinous aroma with overripe fruits, caramel and roasted malt. Sweet flavor with overripe fruits, caramel and roasted malt leading to a sweet finish with warming alcohol.

Ichor ‘03-growler @Mels YEHA-pours a ? head and gold color. Aroma is musty dark malt-sugar, dark fruit-plum/raisin. Taste is musty dark malt-sugar/molasses, dark fruit-plum/raisin, some earthy hops, some spices. Occasional.

Courtesy of matta. This 2005 vintage pours deep dark amber with weak off white head. The aroma is invitingly nice with figs and plums tangled together with some caramel candy, molasses and a sense of alcohol. The taste begins fruity with dates and figs mixed with caramel, molasses and some mild roasty malts. This has a big flavor. Toward the finish the sense and taste of the alcohol grows to a level detectable but not distracting. This is one tasty offering.

Sampled from a 750 ml corked brown bottle this beer poured a medium black color with a trace of a khaki head. The aroma was sweet ripe fruits and molasses. The flavor was sweetish and tangy with ripe fruits (mostly cherry) and a strong long lasting molasses element. The molasses flavor really dominates and lingers forever. The body was flat and moderately thick. Way too one dimensional - so much so that although the initial taste was promising the beer’s scores dropped with each further sip.

Uncarbonated batch, thus it pours a nearly flat, amber/crimson-tinged mahogany. I’m able to coax a thin layer of dark beige bubbles, but it quickly recedes to ring, leaving legs on the glass, and light blotchy residue. Clarity is medium, despite the beer having been cellared for a long time and a careful pour.
Strong, vinous notes in the nose wrap about with liquorous alcohol vapors and succulent, fat malt sugars producing a well-balanced nose. Candy sugar is evident, giving a bit of hardness and some brazen roasted malts are, perhaps, a bit too noticeable on the finish, giving a strongly astringent hazelnut-coffee note that is only soothed, eventually, by a blossoming banana-vanilla-toffee sweetness. The yeast produces quite a bit of peppery phenols and sharp, dry, dark fruits, but is otherwise fairly overtaken by the malts and alcohol. A very honest rendition, though the sweetness fights with the emerging alcohol, as it warms, to produce a bit of a messy situation. Medium to medium-high strength of aroma.
Brash candi sugar hardness, mixing with tart fruitiness and a moderate amount of acidity all converge on the palate, wtih a strong molasses/brown sugar sweetness that helps cut back the tartness/dryness. But it seems to extend itself a bit too far, and without the aid of nearly any carbonation, it comes off as rather syrupy, or at the very least, heavily sticky/chewy. Toffee, dates, currants and concord grape vinousness are certainly very interesting, as well as the pleasant profile of black pepper, clove and vanilla yeast biproducts. But it’s missing that truly elegant equilibrium that the best in style show. This one goes from too sweet, to too alcoholic, to to astringent and back again. Probably a bit too much clove and astringent hazelnut-like notes as well, in the end. Alcohol is on the slightly-too-noticeable side as well. Regardless, it’s got all of the signs of a well-made beer, just dosent quite bring it together. But therein lies the greatest challenge with this style that is packed so full of ingredients/flavors. Someone sent me this bottle, and I don’t remember who, but thank you anyway!

75cl bottle at White Horse, Parons’ Green from the Burgundian Babblebelt. Dark brown colour with ruby edges. Aroma of whisky malt. Great spicey malt/hop/whisky flavours in mouth. Bit thin in mouth on palate. Alcohol is harsh on finish. Some nice toffee/coffee flavours.
