330ml bottle from the Jumbo, Den Haag. Poured a murky medium brown colour with a broken off white head. The aroma is nutty, light toffee caramel. The flavour is moderate to light sweet, with a malt, sweet toffee, mineral, nutty, light floral hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

American style brown ale by this sympathetic Amsterdam brewery with ornithological theme, thanks to Craftmember. Very dense and creamy, thick, beaten egg-like, pale yellow-beige, very thickly lacing head, lightly hazy caramel brown robe, deep, with a rusty-mahogany hue. Aroma of hazelnut shells, dry cookies, walnuts, some iron, nutmeg, dried bitter herbs, orange peel, ‘Haagse hopjes’, caramel candy, soap, touch of coffee grounds. Sweetish onset but restrainedly so, dried fig, fried banana and vague green apple, lively but refined carbonation; smooth, hard-caramelly and nutty maltiness, nut shells in fact with a quickly upcoming toasted bitterness, merging with a spicy hop dosage into a mouth-filling, dryish, long ending, quite quenching. Many new brown ales made in the Low Countries are merely dubbels (‘brown ale’ having been literally translated into Dutch as ‘bruin bier’), but this one intentionally mimics the old Anglo-Saxon brown ale tradition, with low esteriness, a malt-forward profile and modest alcohol strength – and succeeds at this much better than most other ‘brown ales’ I had from both the Netherlands and Belgium. Very well done, clean, to the point and highly drinkable.
