Anbai literally means “Salty Plum” and the word is also used to describe the stat of taste and flavor. Ii Anbai means “just right”!
Hitachino Nest Anbai Ale is brewed based on the high alcohol version (7%) of the siganture beer Hitachino Nest White Ale, infused with locally grown green sour plum (ume), and finished up with a pinch of Japanese sea salt (moshio). The balance of sourness, bitterness, comes from the plum and subtle saltiness, great umami taste of the sea salt is “Ii Anbai - just right!”

Light tasting for a gose but reasonably well balanced and some interesting and subtle plum infusion. Pours light blonde with good head and lacing. Some hay and a little salt. Finishes with light sourness. Tap at Daikaya.

Keg at Taps beer bar, Kl. It pours cloudy pale orange with a decent fizzy white head. The nose is earthy, spicy, salty, wheat, grainy, light funk and plum skin. The taste is crisp, tart, salty, minerals, plum skin, minerals, umeboshi, lactic, decent acidity, light alcohol and citrus peel with a drying finish. Medium body and prickly, effervescent carbonation. Complex, tart and intriguing. In a bar in Malaysia drinking 7% sour beer by the pint and watching Wimbledon on tv. Fuckin awesome all round.

Tap at Molto as Plum Sour Ale. Cloudy golden color, fine rock head. Tangy, salty nose, umeboshi. Salty ume flavor, lightly sour, crisp and refreshing. Interesting and original beer, a bit strange for sure, but fun. More than umeboshi, tastes more like the sweet, salted plums you get in Taiwan or China.

Tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark gold with a white head. I think there’s a plum aroma. Med body or nearly. Flavor is salt, plum, slight sour. Not a whole lot of plum. salty, fruity, sour is sort of accurate description. Rather different. Fair to call it gose. Works well with salty pretzels.

Tap at The Jeffrey as I was running errands. Pours cloudy orange with white head. Nose is salty and fruity. Tastes of tart underripe plums, sea salt, popcorn, earthy, wheat and some pepper. Interesting but a touch of odd sweetness and not enough tart to be really good gose.

12oz draft at Bangers and Lace in Chicago. Very cloudy muted gold color, low clarity. Small but strong head. Aroma is a beauty with strong bretty lactic character. I consider this funk with horseblanket hues. Floral brettiness is strong with this one. The flavor is milder, with a muted Brett but a nice bright finish to the flavor. I think this would function better as a Brett beer instead of a wannabe gose. I maybe get salt and a muted finish of lactic acid. A faint bretty plastic and maybe a bit of salt. I have a very high tolerance for salt so its hard for me tell. A light body but a heavy Brett flavor, so its a bit mismatched. Again, I like the beer but they should have bulked it up and went bretty instead of Gose-y. I don’t taste plum, nor do I believe plum would be evident if just thrown into a beer. This seems like it would be great bottled and aged for a year.

The Diamond, Brooklyn tap: Pours orange with a white head. Aroma is plum and plenty of it with some light funk. Taste is somewhat sweet, ever so slightly sour, and a tad bit salty. Interesting beer. I don’t know if I would have called it a gose, but it was tasty.
