Estonians are rye nation. This grain was sacred to us already when the rest of the world considered rye to be a weed. We did live together with the grain after all. The threshing barn was the most important building in the farm – the sheaves were dried on the poles, threshing was done on the floor and in the chambers our ancestors grew up. The crown jewel of the threshing barn was the large barn oven. It warmed the chambers, cooking pots were simmering on its flames and deep in the belly of the oven the good black rye bread was baked.

Large Barn Oven is a rye stout which glows with the warmth of the barn oven and dignity of old times. Maybe you can fit around the Large Barn Oven to chat even nowadays, who knows.

This is special brew of Large Barn Owen that has been aged in bourbon barrels.

Dark brown. Aroma with slightly sourish notes, rye bread, caramel and strong alcohol. Taste: sweet, caramel, wine, bread crust, light bitterness and whiskey, not bad.

Bottle, batch 1 (from Koht). Pours dark brown. Aroma is roast, malt, chocolate, vanilla, oats. Flavor is sweet and bitter, vanilla, malt, roast, chocolate, oats, some rye spiciness. Finish is roast bitter with vanilla sweetness and some bourbony-boozy notes. Alcohol is rather covered. Overall: good, but feels bit too fresh and too sweet, this may get better with some time on it (unfortunately I don’t have another bottle). I like that they have not over done the bourbon.

Draught @ Ota Olut! Pours pitch black with a smooth head. Aroma of roasty malts, loads of rye bread, syrupy notes and earthiness. Taste is sweet, sticky and syrupy with some roastiness and rye bread notes, hints of salty licorice. Finish is sweet and syrupy with some roastiness and hints of oak, rye and earthiness. Okay.
