A classic example of a beer mild in hops but not in flavour. Sweetness balanced by bitter chocolate malt to produce a rare but much sought after traditional mild.

Note: Has been brewed at various strengths between 3.6% and 4.7%

Bottle from Waitrose. Dark ruby red with a decent, off-white head. Aroma of caramel, milk chocolate and some roasted malts. Roasty flaovur, with liquorice, more chocolate and a dry finish. Good stuff.

(The Jerusalem Tavern) Dark ruby color, not much head. Dark fruits, toffee in the nose. Nutty, a bit even licoricey flavor, light hops in the aftertaste. Decent mild.

Dark ruby brown with a lasting off-white head, leaving lace. Malt, caramel and fruit in the nose. Dryish malty flavour with just enough hops.

Bottle, Waitrose Headington, Oxford, consumed 03-06-09 Pours dark chesnut brown with an off-white bubbly head. The aroma is roasty and nutty. Taste is really quite roasty a little roof of the mouth bitterness, nicely nutty. This is a tasty mild that drinks really well for the abv. A6 A4 F7 P4 Ov13 3.4

Thin coarse brownish head. Barely translucent dark red body. Fruity wooden wild berry aroma, a bit faint. Dry-sweet blackberry and earth taste, very harmonic. Soft, smooth mouthfeel. Light body. Dry, almost tart, edgy aftertaste of blackberry and licorice with floral notes. Bitter burnt notes linger. Excellent. Dangerously drinkable, even with this little alcohol. (0.25l cask, The Jerusalem Tavern, London.)

Very dark color, but with red shades, no head. Light aroma, very light apple and aniseed. Mild flavor of chocolate, with good bitterness and a quality hopping hidden by the dark malts; very light aniseed. Pleasant.

[500ml bottle from the brewery shop] I love St Peter’s Brewery, it’s buildings, its friendly staff, it’s beautiful bottles. It’s just a shame that as of yet I haven’t found a decent beer from them. Still, I reasoned, surely I couldn’t go wrong by trying their take on my favourite style? It pours dark brown (paler than your average mild) with a ridiculously large foaming beige head (no matter how carefully I poured it). Moderate and rather annoying carbonation. Aroma and flavour is all burnt malt, and hence rather bitter in aftertaste. There’s no depth; no other flavours discernable beyond this save maybe a hint of treacle. The mouthfeel is surprisingly refreshing and thirst quenching when cool, but becomes a little sticky as it warms. Overall this is a poor mild, and another disappointing beer from St Peter’s.

Cask at the GBBF 2008. Black colour, dark brown in the highlights, low head. Moderately roasty aroma with some winey notes. The flavour is smooth and moderately roasty, with a moderate bitterness in the finish. Easy drinking, quite nice.
