This Kolsch is one of the original Kuhnhenn recipes, dating back to the earliest days of the brewery, and stylistically dating back centuries. Essentially a German-style golden ale, Kolsch originated in the town of Koln (Cologne) and, although brewed with an ale yeast, is cold conditioned like a lager. The result is a crisp, palate-quenching beer with mild hints of fruit alongside biscuity, cereal notes, with very little bitterness. Extremely balanced and refreshing, yet complex in its simplicity.

Sampled from the tap at GTMW 2023. Pours a clear light gold with a white head that lasts throughout the beer and laces. Aroma has lots of straw with some bread and slightly sweet grain coming through. Flavor has lots of grain with a bit of straw and a touch of bread in the finish.

On tap at Kuhnhenn, this was a very clean, refreshing, crisp kolsch dominated by crisp, petaly hops backed by light bready malt with subtle nectary sweetness.

2004 draught 12/04 at the brewery. Bright yellow-golden, large bubbles, light haze and a small white head. Aroma of light dusty pils malt, some light wheat notes and a tinge of hops. Flavor begins with a light, unagressive yeast, followed by a lightly metallic hops and grain body. The wheat keeps the flavor dry while providing a very even and soft body. Moderate carbonation, faint honey notes. Even served fairly cold, I can still find plenty of flavor in this. Light hints of lemon arise as it warms, brought on by the hops, which are very well done (not overdone). Extremely drinkable, medium-light body and wonderfully to style. Perhaps a little less yeast apparency than I would like, but that could be a result of drinking this too cold. As was intended by the style, this beer goes down quick and easy, with a refreshing hops zing and a smooth, clean wheat and malt end.
