Brewed for our one-year anniversary together with all the breweries in Damme, we’re raising a big stink about that other waterway, the Schipdonk canal. ‘Stinker’ is a top fermented beer, brewed very much as a Belgian ale (multi-step mash and bottle conditioned), but using Beechwood Smoked Malt from Weyermann® Malts in Bamberg (35% of the grist bill) to equip it with its subtle smoked bacon aromas and flavours. The cigar on the label is not only a reference to the smokiness of the rauchbier, but as something which is associated with the celebration of a special occasion, like the first birthday of a brewery.

Keg at HL3, 17/05/18. Very light haze on an amber copper pour with a decent light beige head. Nose is smoked malts, burnt toffee, dried fruits, bonfire notes. Taste comprises beechwood smoke, dates, orange peel, some hop presence, light oak, toffee. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent smoked affair.

Collab of three small Belgian breweries, bottle from Willems. Regularly shaped, creamy, thick, off-white, irregularly lacing head over a hazy, orange-hued amber beer. Aroma of smoked bacon (though not too overpowering), smoked peaches, caramel, hint of cocoa dust, red apple, peanuts, dry cookies, dried orange peel. Fruity onset, crisp red apple, peach, light banana, sweetish, very sharply carbonated, a bit numbing. Nutty, toasty bitterish malt body with a thin metallic edge, caramelly malt sweetness lingering even after the smoke sets in, very obviously so yet still not overpowering and reminiscent more of smoked wood than smoked bacon as in a classic German Rauchbier. Ends with toasted malt bitterness, floral hop bitter accents and lingering fruitiness. Elegant hybrid of a Belgian amber with a Rauchbier, very well executed but perhaps a tad weak in smokiness to accompany a good cigar. Matched well with a cigarette, though...

Fles, Dams Rauchbier. Lichtbruin bier met schuim. Smaak is licht rookachtig en licht zoet met duidelijke houttonen en mooie bitterheid. Heeft een klein zuurtje wat. perfect erbij past
