Ken Fisher is an intriguing character from Portland (Oregon) whose passion for beer has driven him to travel the world in search of brewers interested in brewing beers conceived by him. In Lambrate, he discovered our shared love of hops but also had to deal with our passion for very hot chili peppers! In fact, the Grateful Deaf is the result of a blend of dark, caramellised malt, rye, five varieties of American hops and a generous dose of Habanero! Ken chose the name Grateful Deaf as he himself is deaf and he wanted to create a play on words with the name of legendary US rock band the Grateful Deaf, as well as with the name of a character forming part of British pop culture.

330mL bottle, pours black with a small beige head. Aroma brings out a mix of chili peppers upfront, followed by roasted malt and some resinous hops -- very dry and spicy smelling. Flavour is along the same lines, with roasted malt, resinous hops, caramel and prominent chili that somehow works. Wouldn't think chili would work well in a black IPA, but they've made it work. Finishes earthy, spicy and roasty. Very nice.

Tap. Pours dark ruby with beige head. The head stays for some time. Aroma is mellow roast, malt, hint of chili. Flavor is bitter, roast, chili, malt. Finish is chili burn and roast bitter. Alcohol is well covered. Overall: good, more chili beer than black ipa.

Draught @ Lambrate Pub, Milan. Pours very dark brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, light coffee, light hops, little vegatables, light green chili. Flavor is malts, coffee, hops, grass, light citrus, green chili. Medium body, average carbonation. Quite some heat from the chili, but not to hot. More S/H/V than black IPA. 111215
