Ken Fisher is an intriguing character from Portland (Oregon) whose passion for beer has driven him to travel the world in search of brewers interested in brewing beers conceived by him. In Lambrate, he discovered our shared love of hops but also had to deal with our passion for very hot chili peppers! In fact, the Grateful Deaf is the result of a blend of dark, caramellised malt, rye, five varieties of American hops and a generous dose of Habanero! Ken chose the name Grateful Deaf as he himself is deaf and he wanted to create a play on words with the name of legendary US rock band the Grateful Deaf, as well as with the name of a character forming part of British pop culture.

Pours almost black with a healty and dense off-white yellowish head that shows very nice retention and lacing. The aroma is surprisingly not too vivid: dark rye bread and underlying peppery spiciness, with grassy/herbal hints. Taste is brighter with roasted malts and dark rye bread, peppery spiciness and grassy, slightly resinous notes. Only the slighest hint of citric hoppiness. Dry peppery finish and aftertaste; pepper feels robust but not overwhelming. Medium bodied with average carbonation. I was expecting something bolder in flavour but the beer was still enjoyable, well made and actually quite refreshing.

On tap at Koht, pours a dark black with some sudsy white head. Nose does not hint to what the flavor has, bread, malt, yeast, hints of black pepper. Flavor has tons of chile, jalapeno, black pepper, molasses, malt, toast. Finishes very peppery.

@ BXLfest 2017.
