Splice the genes of a traditional porter and an East Coast IPA and you get Recombinant, a black IPA from the Mid-Atlantic. Dry and slightly roasty, this one gets its hop punch from piney Pacific Northwest Simcoe and tropical New Zealand Topaz and Wakatu hops.

Pours black with a beige head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, caramel, citrus, grape and pine. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter with a long caramel, piney, citrus and chocolate finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

On tap at the brewpub. It pours a dark brown body under a small, dense, light beige head leaving curtains. The aroma is lightly roasted, with dark chocolate, coffee grit and a nice piney, resiny hoppyness. Some cocoa too. It’s full to medium bodied, dry and with a nice carbonation level. Cocoa, dark chocolate, coffee grit and a nice bitterness in the finish. Lovely bitter, piney hops. Lasting roasted, hoppy finish. A tad too much on the roasted malty side, but sure a nice one. Really tasteful. 150621
