Spencer Monks' Reserve Ale is a classic Trappist Quadruple ("Quad") in the Belgian tradition. This Quad is fragrant, robust and full-bodied, mahogany in color and crowned with a dense, tan, frothy head. Its malt-forward profile yields to a warm finish.

Bouteille: Very deep amber coloured with a ruby sheen, presumably hazy, medium-sized creamy - slowly collapsing - off-white head, moderate bitter-sweet nose of toasted malt with traces of molasses, dried fruits, caramel and shy herbal hops underneath; moderate bitter-sweet flavour, nearly full bodied, quite soft; lingering bitter-sweet finish with chocolatey spots, herbal hops and warming all in the aftertaste. Not bad at all, but lacks the complexity of a real good belgian quadruple. Or, again, quite poor compared to a Rochefort 10...

Decent well balanced Quad.

Bottle shared in London - cheers to Danno. Pours clear brown with a small, foamy off-white head. Nicely rounded, has some boozy kick, well toasted malts, dried berries, a little earth, raisin. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Lightly warming finish, toasty toffee, brown bread, more dried berries. Tasty stuff.

0.33 l bottle from 'Bottle Shop Den Bosch', best before June 2019, cellared for a year. Clear, very dark ruby to black with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, slightly yeasty and moderately fruity aroma of raisins, prunes, cough syrup and some caramel. Gently sweet, slightly bitter, malty, slightly yeasty and moderately fruity taste of raisins, prunes, cough syrup, caramel and licorice, followed by a medium long, quite bitter, gently spicy, a bit yeasty and a little boozy finish. Medium body, gently effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Nice Quad but a bit too spicy, lacks the rich fruitiness of the great Belgian examples.
